Has anybody taken the tank off an 1100 and had a look inside?
I know this has been mentioned before but how come you can only fill the tank to the bottom of the filler neck, what is wrong with the two inches or so to the top. If I fill my bike above the neck it runs out the overflow.

I'm not worried about the tank exploding or the petrol expanding cause I live in Ireland and it's not that warm, believe me.

Is there any way to modify the overflow to allow the tank to be filled to the top?

I look forward to the replies about this dripping problem..

I know the one about drilling the holes!!!!!!!!!!!

But there's no point in filling the thing quickly if it's going to run out the overflow onto the ground.

Hence my question about modifying the tank end of the overflow.

If you fill the tank to the brim and don't ride off promptly, the heat of the engine causes the petrol to expand and then it overflows. Don't forget that the petrol is stored underground and it's quite cool when it is pumped. If you fill up and then ride off, make sure that you cover around 40 miles before you stop, to empty the extra fuel out of the expansion space in the tank.

My 1100 did the same thing & by the time i had paid there was fuel all over the floor :( so i put a oneway valve on the overflow pipe (like you get on enduro bike filler caps ) lets it pull air in, & stopped it leaking when i fill it to the top :D
I always only fill right up on runs though & it works fine, would not fill up & park up though

Hi Dibbles,
Do you mean you want to increase the size of the "overflow" hole (right hand side of Tuned's pic) ?

If so, the only solution is to drill out the old pipe and weld in a new one. I'm sure I am misreading your question.:o

Edit: 4th time reading your initial post, :D Is it that you'd like to reduce the length of the neck which goes down into the tank?

A more drastic solution to the problem than drilling holes in it.

(My solution is, after filling to the brim I put the bike on the centre stand.)

Hi Daithi.

My query, why can't I fill the tank to the brim. If I fill the bike to the top it runs out the overflow. All previous bikes I could fill them till they overflowed.
So obviously the tank end of the overflow is not at the top of the tank, but 2" lower and on the left side of the tank because the fuel runs out when you put it on the side stand.
I am wondering if anyone has pulled the insides out of the tank and had a look to see how the overflow is set-up?

I'll have a go myself the next time it's empty and I have a bit of time.

This is the only image I could find of the 1100gs, trimming most of the red
tube would allow you to fill to the brim and would be easy to do.

what does the plastic oval shaped sticky out thing do? I found mine at the bottom of my tank recently.

Also, HAS anyone ever taken one of these tanks apart and put it back together successfully?

Heres one I can answer the oval black thingy is to prevent fuel that surges around in the tank going straight down the vent there is a small hole in the top and a tiny hole in the bottom to let the chamber drain I serviced my bike once and put the air line up both the vents that come out of the tank the one that allows the recess around the cap was fine it just blew it clear the other one exploded the plastic chamber because of the restricted flow through the tiny holes trust me without it fuel does piss out of the vent onto the ground untill the tank is about half empty
hope this helps

When playing with your tanks take heed of the warning in the Clymer manual regarding the petrol tank. "Do not use a naked light whist looking into the petrol tank." But, it does'nt say why!.
