Hello all,

Just started up my 1100 after not using it for a week. Immediately there was a loud engine speed dinking noise. Not the normal cold BMW sound! It seems to be coming from the front belt cover area and got a little bit less noisy after a couple of minutes but it's still audible. It definitely wasn't there last time I used it. It's on 37000 miles.

Anyone got any ideas please?

Chris

Check the alternator belt, they tend to shred about that mileage :yikes

Thanks Iain,

It's actually booked in on Friday for the belt to be changed along with the rest of the 36K service as it happens. I gave it another go after my post and it seemed a bit quieter so I took it for a short run and at the end of that it sounded more or less normal. Just had a look at the belt and it looks OK so I don't know what the noise is/was

No worries. Old or too thin spec oil makes the bike rattle a bit more.

It's the chain tensioner of the auxiliary shaft.
Positioned behind the alternator belt cover.

From frontal view on the righthand side.

Same setup as on the camchains.

Here's a pic.

They said something similar at Balderstones when I mentioned it before the service so now it's got fresh oil in I hope I won't hear it again. I'll just make sure I do the oil on time in future!

Thanks all,

Chris
