1100gs death rattle!

I've got an 1100gs with 175,000 on the clock. It's always been maintained and been reliable. At the end of the summer I rode it from Cadwell Park to London. Once in london as the engine got hotter a rattle appeared. The hotter it got the worse the rattle became. At one point it got so bad I really thought it wasn't going to make it. The noise appears to be half engine speed (cam speed) and isn't effected by pulling in the clutch etc. The oil lamp is working and the temp gauge never got above 70%, I'm using a normal 10/40w oil. Once the bikes moving (in free flowing air again) and cools down the noise goes again. Ideas please?

Yep, probably timing chain tensioner on the front RH of the engine. It works with part help of oil pressure and can wear al la flat 4 K series. I had a rattler from approx 15k to 50k and it was no different during that time. As soon as it hit 5 bars it would rattle.

You can check it out but it is under the front cover and is a semi PIA rather than a quick job. I didn't bother...

It "clatters" and 20-50 is the best tip as from the experts above....

PS Any air cooled bike can change quite significantly when stuck in heavy traffic but they do work on large temp ranges.

Try and do some decent length trips on it. Nothing but short hops to the shops aren't kind to any engine.

According to my calculations, your crankshaft has given you about 1.5 billion turns, so far. Many happy returns.

At an average of 30mph and 4,000 revs that would be 0.7 trillion turns of the camashaft.

175,000miles/30mph*60minutes*4,000 revs/2 (cam half engine speed) = 700,000,000 revs.
