1100GS Sticky Calliper - off to Ireland Sunday.

Have a warped front disc, just changed the discs and pads and the right hand calliper is sticking. Annoyingly I’m supposed to be off riding it around Ireland for a week come Sunday. Didn’t feel sticky before, but must have been why the disc warped. got no time to order and install a rebuild kit. Think cleaning / working pistons would ease it? Or anyone near Surrey got a calliper ?

Had a similar thing years ago on an 1100gs it was the internals on a brake line breaking down clogging the line .
Cure was fitting braided brake lines.
 
If nothing else is available... With the caliper still fitted pump the pistons out one by one and buy a cheap set of small g clamps to help ease them back in... If you do it one by one you'll find the sticking piston or pistons, clean as much as possible and wind back in... One caliper should take less than 1/2 hour... I have had this over the years and it usually frees things off fine enough...
 
Also... In general when you change the pads do the above cleaning regime... I try to clean up the calipers at least twice a year and even then can get a sticking piston or two...
 
As above, remove the caliper and slowly press the brake lever - you should see all four pistons move out equally.
Any that don't are a likely culprit.

Use a fine pick to gently tease the piston dust boot away from that piston, and spray a silicon based lube into the boot.
A petroleum based lube will cause the boot to swell.

Work all four pistons back into the caliper and repeat until you have equal motion on each piston.

If the piston refuses to move, leave the pad in place on the opposing side and install an appropriate 3/8 socket to wedge the pad and the good piston in situ.
This will then concentrate the full effort to the binding piston - go slowly, it will only move a small amount with each stroke.

Pistons should always push back in with Finger force

If you need a g clamp then they need stripped

It is Usually salts in behind the rubber outer wiper rings (And possibly inner hydraulic rings too) squeezing the rubber against the piston and not giving it clearance to retract one used

Also Small bleed hole in Master cylinder if it is clogged Whilst the usual thing is bleeding out air it also bleeds out the return pressure!

Rebuild kit with pistons and seals and the 2 halves centre O ring will then give you a known quantity the Early brembo with the silver circles do have problems with the Bolts sticking in the calliper halves as they more exposed than the EVO generation

To be honest If Mikey's are ready to rock ?? that may be the fastest and simplest option
 
it cost me north of £140 for a full set of new pistons and seals when I did the front Brembo calipers on my 1150 a year and a half ago and I was lucky that they came apart and rebuilt with no issues , if you can get a set of rebuilt ones ready to go it saves a load of hassle

I ken dat and you are doing this for a living but I've run older shite for years all year round and in all the bikes especially the older BMs I've hardly ever had a finger force piston and only lightly g cramp them... That's the reality from my experience and the only easy finger force pistons I've had are on newer less worn bikes... Either that or I'm a weak bastard which may also be true looking at some of the gorilla mits I see...😂😂👍

Last minute pre trip stresses are never good whatever...

You don’t need front brakes on a 1100 / 1150 with the engine braking anyway. What’s the issue? :nenau :D
