Hi
If the new bmws have 110bhp and the GS has essentially the same engine what's the difference?

About 10 bhp, give or take the odd bit of exaggeration....

I read quite a good article in Bike mag this month about chasing the highest bhp. One thing the makers do is raise the maximum revs the engine can do & so can increase the bhp. Have a look at a dyno graph of the new bikes compared to the older model usually the bhp is there abouts the same until the last 2K or so revs. According to Bike mag the older Yam R1 has more bhp through the low & mid range than the new one but the new `un can rev higher & so get more bhp. The 110 bhp BM engine must use 98 RON petrol too.

As well as the different compression ratio I believe that the intake is different (That is it has a semi ram-effect as on my 1100S) whereas the GS needs to have a slightly more protected intake position. The thing about having to use 98 octane is interesting too. Undoubtedly as a result of the higher compression ratio (12:1). Out of interest if you think that's high the new K1200S has a 13:1!!

In that article in BiKE, I believe they retuned an R6 [now] to FZR600R [199?) type power delivery and in all but top end tests it was more rideable for most of the testers - Better lap times, better 60 - 80, 80 - 100 acceleration and just more real world friendly.......

I confess I don't ride my 12 real fast but just love the big kick in the pants when you whack the throttle open and devour a line of dawdling traffic - I don't care if it does 120 or 220 coz I rarely if ever go there.....

There's a spider on the curtains......

Quite.

And all the better for catching the sheep unawares no doubt?
