1150 Adv - Clutch slave failure?

Turned out to be the slave cylinder - seals gone and bore scored. New one fitted, along with a new stainless braided hose - rubber sleeve cut away (thanks for the tip Neil ). Should be able to pick it up on Saturday...

Just got back from picking up the Adv from my local independent. As I guessed, it was the clutch slave cylinder that had failed. Pretty unimpressed as a new one was fitted just over two years ago - the bike has done 12k miles in the intervening time - almost all in good, dry weather.

Kevin at KRF found the bore badly scored...

...and a build-up of dirty watery gunge surrounding the piston just short of the seal...

The hydraulic fluid (replaced at the same time as the cylinder) was filthy.

New fluid, a pretty new stainless braided hose (mine is an early Adv, built before these became standard) and a new cylinder - all in all about £250 parts & labour (£150 in parts alone) - may thanks Kev

Is it possible to remove and replace the seal between the gearbox and the clutch slave cylinder with out lifting the rear frame?
or would it be much easier and result in a more succsesful job?

Reason is that I looked at mine this morning and there was gear in on there - quite a bit it seemed to me.
I dont think the clutch is slipping, but I dont ride aggessively and thinking that now I know about it, I should fix it!

If I understand you talking about gearbox seal clutch output slave cylinder ? If I'm correct this seal can only be replaced from inside the box , so gearbox have to be split

Some of the professionals on here might, as they have the technique and experience of unbolting the slave cylinder off the back of the gear box and moving it out of the way to get sufficient access.

But the question is why would you won't to try a short cut if you have limited or no experience. The rear frame only has to be raised by 50mm or so to clear the foot peg anchor points. This will allow you to remove the Gearbox cross brace, and that will then give you clear and unrestricted access to unbolt the slave cylinder and replace the gearbox input shaft rear oil seal.

No he isn't. He is talking about oil around the Slave cylinder which sits on the back of the gearbox. When you remove the slave cylinder from the back of the gear box, there is an oil seal which sits on the rear portion of the input shaft. The seal can easily be removed, and a replacement tapped into place.

I had read up on changing the seal, feeling confident now, just needed some reassurance
will be schedulded to do in the next few weeks (wont be riding the bike for a few weeks due work)

Yep, 1100 seal mounted inside the gearbox, so a big job to replace it. 1150 is removed from the outside.

Don't forget to measure the depth of the original seal. There are oil ways that require it to be at the correct depth. Behind the seal sits a bearing, so if your tempted to use a couple of self tappers to pull it, don't drill the pilot holes to deep. I used a blunt and rounded off long screwdriver to pop it out. I didn't find the need to lift the subframe at all.

I hear and agree with all the points about inserting the seal to the correct dept, over on ADV I found a thread that shows a tools somebody made to insert the seal.

Question
I measure the depth of the existing seal
measure the depth that the clutch slave cylinder inserts to the housing
extract the existing seal
install the new seal to similar depth
insert the new seal using the clutch slave cylinder to press it in squarly and to the right depth
bolt the clutch slave cylinder to the rear face of the gearbox and be done

or does the seal go deeper than the length of the clutch slave cylinder?

You have no need to measure the slave cylinder.

You are not correct in your assumption. In fact you're completely wrong.
The seal can be replaced from the rear of the gearbox.

I wish people would only offer advice on work they have real experience of actually doing themselves.

If you read earlier post you would see that was corrected. And yes I done work on 1100 and 1150 boxses

Deleted my post as i hadn't seen your mistake had already been pointed out by two others.

But your bad advice is unforgivable seeing as you now admit to working on both types of gearboxes

1150 about 6 year back so amature memory not as good as your pro

Seems like the hardest part of this job is lifting the rear frame section for better access.
(assuming clutch is still fine - wear and not contamination)

Pull the actuator shaft out, clean, replace felt seal
extract existing seal
install new seal
install actuator shaft
install clutch slave cylinder

Hardest part is removing the old seal - replacing the new seal is the easiest part, simply use a long/deep socket that's same diameter as the seal to re-fit .
