I was given the idea by this post by Pomm001 :thumb who has done the same sort of thing....

On my second 1150 GSA and I'd forgotten just how much turbulence whacks one in the head when 'at speed'

Now the idea of Tobinators or an MRA screen is to allow a bit more air underneath the screen which reduces the turbulence. One problem with the Tobinators (IMHO) is the fact that the screen tends to wobble about a bit more...

so, with the kind donation of a test screen by Paul (Oblertone :beerjug:) my plan was hatched.

Firstly Screen as standard on the floor

Then add a strip of masking tape along the bottom and 'mould it to fit the countours'

then by whatever means ( I used a marker pen fastened to a bit of bent wire- draw a line around 30mm from the edge following the contours

Tools I used - Black and decker 'dremel' type tool with a metal cutter- and glasses ( still managed to get bits of hot plastic in my eye so well worth the precaution)

Use the cutter to follow the line, and the result looks like this

Take off the tape and use some coarse emery paper or similar to smooth edges

First cut measured at 35mm and put on the bike

Took the bike out and its not perfect but definately better than standard for me at 5'9 and a bit

So then I decided to cut a little off the right hand bulge to even up the spaces under the screen either side

Result as below

I don't reckon as a prototype that looks bad :)

Out for another quick ride and again I got the impression it was a little better than before....

So as its a test screen I decided to take even more off the bottom- the only thing to be wary of is getting too close to the mounting holes, as I think eventually it could weaken the screen if you overdo it ;)

I chopped another inch off it

Took it out for a test ride - music from the ipod clear for approximately 10 -20mph higher speed than before ( not scientific) and it does seem to reduce the buffeting....

Could be a cheap or even no cost mod ;) I can't guarantee it will work for you but I'm going to get to work ( carefully) on my good screen :thumb

naca ducts

HI Bryn you should have put 2 naca ducts in it, will prob acheive same result, with less mullering.
ive just naca ducted a std screen for the hell of it,and chopped off the top lip too, it was just creating too much turbulence.great relief on the top of the bonce but its just too narrow, the air is rocking my head side to side very fastly, its the constant rocking side to side which is the next thing to attack.
You are on the same mission as me.you can try it if you want.paul.

Looked at naca ducts, and with my limited skill thought it highly likely I'd naca the screen completely :D Looks a bit too technical :augie

Sorry to be off topic, but Bryn what's that avatar at the bottom of your signature from, sniper shot by another??

Saving Private Ryan ;) Its the sniper in the bell tower that had taken out Vin Diesel ....

I've started down this route with an old screen also. Took about 30mm off so far but not got to the point where it can be considered OK.

It seems to be worse on the left side, which is probably because of the uneven profile and hence reduced air flow around the LH light, the TT perspex light guard probably doesn't help either.

After reading your post I think I'll got straight for the full trim as you've ended up with!

As the gap either side is different due to the profile of the silver plate, I'd imagine the airflow is going to be disturbed, so the idea would be to make the airflow even across the whole profile, but its a bit hit and miss :augie
