It gets used daily and has been running a little rough but I know it's massively overdue for service.

Stopped at some lights yesterday and when I pulled away I only got a short distance before the bike splutterred and cut out - very similar to the old days when you rode off without switching on you petrol tap :D

Fuel was low, so I topped it up from a jerry can (very embarassing to be buying fuel in a can - people thought I was one of those panic buyers)

Engine turns, there are some indications that fuel is going somewhere as you can hear it at the exhaust end but no joy.

I think that maybe it's to do with the battery having got run down (again, I know this will need changing this year) so I get jump leads which give the starter motor renewed energy but still no dice.

The only other time I've had something like this it was the Hall Sensor - but I've only ever read of those failing when a bike is parked up idle and then won't re-start. Is it possible for them to fail mid-ride?

To make matters even worse I know there is a small amount of oil weeping from the front cover so I guess it could have wormed it's way onto the sensors (not tested this yet)

Any ideas? (other than I should really get my bike serviced :D )

As with an old dog - sometimes it is the humane thing.............

Just to have it put down.:comfort

"Long over due for a service", when did you last change the fuel filter?.

similar symptom

Sounds a familiar story to mine a couple of months ago, mine was the HES, also check where the HES contact block plugs into, under the tank, its a very low voltage signal and dirty contacts can have this effect too.

Single spark,twin spark?.
Any other symptoms....tacho going mad, clock resetting, can you hear the fuel pump operate at switch on?.
Sidestand switch?.
