my 2002 1150 gs has always had a engine rattle just for 5 seconds on start up it has never got any worse in 10,000 miles. now on 27.000.is this normal? still runs perfect.any ideas!!!!!

"They all do that sir"

Has something to do with the cam chain tensioner, being hydraulic it take's a few seconds to take up the slack in the chain.

;)

rattle

if mine only rattled on start i would be happy, start up on hot sounds dreadfull, knocking and rattle, get all sorts of weird noises hot and cold, but then again it has'nt got a fairing round it . if you've had a jap bike you've been spoilt, try a triumph triple , sounds like a diesel when hot. :clap

Replace Lh Cam Chain Tensioner

I fitted the latest ( 3rd generation?? ) LH tensioner parts a few months ago - completly eradicates start-up rattle - cold, hot or very hot!! - absolutely brilliant, bike also very quiet at tick-over or in town when hot. More info can be found on the link below, I think I've listed the latest part numbers and links to ADV site photo guides on my 2nd reply on that post?:-

Please note the parts listed were ordered from my local dealer no problem and don't be swayed by discusions about different oils - a heavier oil make your problem less obvious, but it's only camouflaging the underlying design problem - otherwise BMW wouldn't have changed things?.

Cheers......................Grizzly
