1150 front end problem

After a bit of help here. I appear to have something wrong with the front end of my bike and I can’t quite figure out what’s going on. The bike has been a little bit sloppy in corners for some time – nothing serious, I can just feel that it isn’t as solid as it used to be.

The other day, picking the bike up from the side stand, I noticed some flex in the handlebars. When the bike is the centre stand and the weight on the rear wheel, I can stand on the pegs and move the bars up and down quite a lot. It looks as though the top yoke is flexing on its mounting point.

I’m sure they don’t all do that – do they? If it’s just mine, what’s likely to be wrong and how can I sort it?

Thanks in advance

Alf

Could it be the Telelever Ball joint.............caused by too many antics in your photos !!!!!!!!!

The Wheelies are almost certainly to blame Johnny - I have no doubt about that. It's not the telelever bolt though – although it has come loose before  The flex is much further up - around the top yoke. Just been looking in the manual and I reckon it's the bearing that the top yoke sits on, can't see it being anything else. Manual mentions using a crane, which sounds a bit serious:confused:

Think I'll order the bearing from MW in the morning.

Anyone else got anymore input?

I'm guessing that replacing 5, 6, 9 and the non existent 10 should do the trick.

Spoke to MW today. Apparently the headstock bearing is the most likely candidate. New one in the post:)

where'd you get the parts list?

It's the BMW ETK, same as the dealers use I believe. Got it on Ebay a while back but only got round to installing it recently.

I'll chip in towards the bacon;) Two sugars please:D

if i contribute to the bacon as well can i have the ETK as well.:D

let me know.

cheers

I reckon that's the crucial statement right there. Are you saying that the big nut - number 10 on your pic - isn't on your bike? Guess that's what could be causing a degree of sloppiness then:rolleyes:

Or have I read it wrong:confused:

I think he means it's not shown on the parts list.

Alf, as another semi "wild boy" who's been known to pop the occasional ;) wheelie, how much were the parts?

For future reference of course....

Spot on Steve - I meant that the nut isn't shown on the parts list. I'm a spanner numpty but I think I'd have noticed if it had fallen off:rolleyes:

Haven't got a price yet - I'll let you know when I know. As it happens, MW said just replace the bearing and re-use the nut and bolt.

Look forward to seeing how much of a wild boy you are on a ride out soon;)

Hope it's not the thread stripped in the headstock, it shouldn't be, but i hope it isn't

wheelies can work out expensive

I hope not too :( Will let you know once it's all apart.

sloppy front end

if it is not top bearing try the bottom ball joint nut on top of bottom swing arm, remove plastic cover and get allen key to fit into stud and try loosening the nut [ mine was loose] remove put thread lock on and redo up , my sloppy front end was transformed, i was going to get rid of bike but i amm into it again
