I'm Still ongoing with this "Durotour" gearbox project.
Trying to build the gearbox BMW should have made..
I now have in my grubby mitts,a fecked adv enduro gear cluster and a std spare gs road bike box.
My Aim is to meddle with the ratios, adv enduro 1st,std gs overdrive top, and the bits in the middle im still messing with.
Ive seen posts by Mr eptoe on changing the adventure 1st etc and posts by Mike O .
Mike O had a chap in the states split and re-assemble the shaft.
Has anyone over here succesfully split and rebuilt the intermediate shaft?
And what kind of tonnage was needed to separate and rebuild?
Out of interest I rang coopers and they reckon the adv enduro 1st output gear and the complete adv enduro intermediate shaft are over £800 feckity feck.
Its a bit of a con really, i cant see why, they couldnt make the intermediate shaft strippable, and not a sealed unit.

Drop Anton Largiader an email - he'll be able to answer any questions you have on this project, as it's exactly what I had done.

Durotour..

Did you just change the 1st and 6th? or did you mess around with the other gears?
I note one pair of gears are machined together i believe, so im stuck with those pair wether its pair from gsa or gs.
I think a pretty good goal would be enduro 1st, adv 2,3,4,5, std gs overdrive top.
That way ive got the low down first for traffic, close ratio 2,3,4,5 for blatting around, and overdrive for mile munching.
I'll email the american fellow and see what he says.
I did wonder about sending him the 2 shafts and see what wizardry he could do.
Thanks Mike.

what a nice idea for a 1200rt!

BMW in their wisdom? fitted a 5 and a half speed close reatio gearbox to these bikes, with a high first and low 5 and a half speed. Absolutely brilliant for racing and a total fuckup for road use, where the bike smokes it's clutch when taking off 2 up on a hill, and revs it's nuts off on the motorway.
If such a box or cluster were available, I would buy.

Which 1150 is this?

I agree the first on my 2001 bike is too high. Its crap in slow traffic moving me along too quick. But the E gear is brilliant. Really smooths things out on the Autobahn. Almost like having a seventh.

I think the first gear and shaft is one machined part. I seem to remember Anton had to send them to two engineering shops before he found someone that could split them.

There's nothing wrong with 2,3,4&5 - I now have the Adv 'enduro' first and the GS Lite 'E' sixth. It was a really worthwhile mod - still going strong 30k or so miles later. The cost was eye-watering - my subconscious has blocked out the total - it is NOT an economically viable endeavour from a cost point of view - you have to think of it in terms of value. I'm keeping this bike, so I consider it money well spent.

PS WTF is Durotour?

Durotour...Mike you have the only one on the planet i know of....at the moment, A Gearbox to do a bit of off road and tour at hi speed hence the nickname (en)durotour.
I did also think i may fit a 32/11 fd from an 1150 rt to drop the top end a tiddly bit and lower all the others a tiddly bit too.
I may even refinish the front part of the box black to be the same as yours..:thumb
I think im gonna manufacture some special tools to try and separate the shaft.
There will be a large pause while i do this as ive a dead gs in the garage to fix, then another bike to mend, then its gearbox playtime.
Watch this space.

Ah - a randomly made up word? All is clear...

Mike

Depends...

You mean it'll do all the things my standard gearbox does. :D
Depends what standard box you mean? adv or road?
My 1150 runs a std road box with the tall overdrive top.
Ive just repaired an adv box, road tests showed 70mph=4krpm, my road box is 80mph=4krpm, so its an additional 10 mph for the same revs, there must be a large fuel saving over a long tour.
I'm getting around 12-13 miles per litre, the other boys are a bit behind that.
So if i can put the adv enduro first into the mix,it should be a good combo.
I regularly run 2 up, with all the crap that goes with two people and the lower first will be a real plus.
Ive done some calcs and it looks like if i put an 1100 fd on the back it will be like an instant adv conversion thru all the gears, but this isnt what im after, its the extreme wide ratios im after.
Time will tell, ive now got an additional spare few days now so i'll get on with it this week.
Ps Neil, i havnt forgotten your car cd's, ive just got to go to pc world and get some blank dics.
