1150 Grabrail?

Hi All,

Just fitted a Givi Monokey rack for an E52 box to my 1150, which has required removal of the grab-rail.

Has anyone else done this and found a replacement grab-rail solution, like maybe a pair of handles side mounted on the pannier rails or something similar?

Any suggestions gratefully received,

I am getting a Givi V46 on Friday and will have to do what you have said to install the mounting plate. I have opted for the backrest and was hoping this will solve the problem of no grab rail. By the way, was the plate easy to install or is there anything I need to look out for. I too have an 03 R1150 GS in black. cheers, Ricky.

Ricky,

Base plate installation, like all Givi specific applications, is wee buns.

Curent pillion is still, however, minus someting to hold on to, apart from my ample waist, which doesn't float my boat at all.

Just fitted it this evening. Easy enough but you know the black plastic bit that slides into the plate so the locking mechanism works, the bit where the box locks to the plate,does it just sit there?

Sorry, you have lost me there... is it possible the base plates for your V46 and my E52 are different? My plate (part No E189) has two small rearward facing lugs at the front - one each side - and a large lug central at the rear which is where the box locks in place. There was a little piece of plastic supplied to plug the gap in the rear lug, but it isn't necessary and didn't fit very well so I didn't use it.

It is the also the e189 and that little bit of plastic that did not fit too well is the piece i was talking about. I pushed it in and it seems alright. Thanks, Ricky.

Hey Ricky,

Sounds like fun nowadays with Givi, last time I did this with a Givi plate (R1150RT) that lil' ol' bit of plastic sure fitted jus' fine, but not this time, it ain't designed to fit in the hole they say it is.

That's either progress or a case of 'lets piss these guys off some just before they think they have done a good job.'

I don't see as to how it makes any difference whether it's fitted or not??

Re original question - BMW has a nylon webbing grab handle that fits under/between the seats. While touring with a friend in Sweden his 1150 GS had such due to having the BMW topbox.
I seem to recall someone saying that the grab handle came with the topbox but not convinced by this. Even if BMW cannot supply this you could make up one quite easily... I think it attached to the seat clamp bolts. It really was useful and I used it all the time when riding pillion and it just stows away by pushing under the seats. Much like the road bikes of the 60's and 70's with long lifting seats... had similar straps across the seat...this bmw one though is looser/longer.

I had considered a strap in the event a rigid rail was not a possibility, I shall enquire from the local dealer.

Second plan was maybe a pair of hardware store handles mounted along the top of the pannier rails, but that would look crap!

Look the pannier rails work fine as grab handles when not in use but the strap that I experienced really was useful.

I was in the local BMW franchise this morning and the parts guru says he has never heard of an official 'strap' part - maybe for particular markets only he reckoned?

A little ingenuity required here, a solution will be found!

The strap exists !! I got mine bundled with the baseplate for the BWM topbox. It's not a great solution though, I guess cos it's too low and isn't enough to 'hold on' to.
At any rate, my pillions don't seem to use it much, even after I showed them it was there.
What we end up doing, is that if I'm 2-up, the topbox goes on. This gives them something to lean back on, and they can hold on to my jacket belt in a relaxed way without fearing being tipped off the back.

Update - the strap BiG DoM and gasman talked about is BMW part 46 54 2 316 674 and is described as a 'strap modification set'. I have one on order, hopefully it does the job!

I have an E52 box and plate fitted to my gs1150 and you can do it retaining the grab rail. Mount the base plate as per givi instructions ,then take your grag rail and cut off the two round alloy bosses from the base, this allows you to mount it quite safely onto the Givi baseplate (you need slightly longer cap head bolts). When you put the top box plate onto the steel base plate mount it approx 2 to 3 cms further back. You will then be able to put on the top box albeit mounted slightly further back and still have use of the grab rail. Did this mod 10.000 miles ago no problem. To reverse it should you remove the givi gear just keep the two sawn off bosses as spacers.
