Hi all, Is there a document that lists build codes or similar relating to what gearbox ratios were fitted. I`m a newbie to the gs world and have read the adventure has shorter first. Std gs has sport box or overdrive 6th. How can i tell whats fitted if i go to view a bike..Tia Lee

The early 1150GSA had the option of a lower 1st gear at factory order time but I recall the dealer actively advising against it when I ordered mine. Not sure if it ever became the standard config for later 1150GSA model years, but there'll probably be someone along shortly to update.

my 2004 1150 GSA had a lower 1st gear than my 2003 1150GS

the GSA also felt more torquey in 3-4 while the 1150gs was nice on motorways in top gear...

but I never took the time to read the booklet about it or the reason why....

Search Anton Lagardier
His has codes and specs of every gearbox BMW have ever built

Low 1st was always optional on the 1150 Adv

6th gear was always a lower ratio on Adv’s, than standard 1150 GS (unless you bought a 1150 GS Sport in 2003, which was fitted with the same gearbox as the Adv’s)

2003 1150GS was very close to 20mph/1,000 revs in 6th so a good motorway gear but not much use below around 50mph. Earlier bikes the 6th gear was called eco or overdrive or something but was really just a sixth gear.

If you are going to use it off road at all the lower first from the Adventure box would be useful as the strandard version was quite high for that kind of use. It's also a dry, car type, clutch so you don'r want to be slipping it too much.

I used a ramp to move the different bikes about and the 1150GSA, HP2e's and 1200GSA where a pleasure to walk up in gear with minimal hassle while the standard 1100 or 1150gs was a bloody nightmare and you could smell them... not liking it

Thank you guys. I'll emerse myself in that link. I would definitely like the lower first gear.

You’ll get used to it.......you’ll have to...:D

Mikeyboy of this Parrish used to make up the hybrid gear boxes you seek, but it requires the internals of two gear boxes so that the hybrid intermediate shaft can be manufactured.

From what I remember, the intermediate shaft is machined with the first gear as a part of it. Then all the other intermediate gears are pressed on.

Yes I read about the lower final drive. If that was fitted to a std gs with overdrive 6th would the overall range be similar to gsa with a short 6th.
