I replaced mine with a new one recently so I also need to get the old one repaired. But I paid someone to replace it when I had a service, and no it wasn't easy, I also had to replace the hall sensor.

It's not easy. You have to take the tank off, remove the alternator bolts, undo the pulley, undo the wishbone rear bolts, and only then will you be able to slide it out. If you need to remove the Hall sensor plate (eg you want to replace the cover) you also need a simple device to find the right timing when you fit it again (a led and a resistor £2). Ah you also need a new cranckshaft seal (£6). I've done it and took a couple of hours, only problem was the left wishbone bolt snapped like a biscuit and took me ages to sort it out.
I only replaced mine because it was damaged, if it was just for the paintwork I would have sprayed keeping it in place...not worth the effort
