Hi, just registered after being a visitor to this site for some time (Was previously registered/member but in the old website format so not sure if that is still functioning)

Having just suffered the ignominy of pushing my 2000 1150GS a mile or so home through the town centre (complete with schoolkids coming out of school) my first thought was to see if someone out there can help me with my 'Technical problem'

Shortly after setting off, engine cut out completely. Unable to immediately restart but after waiting 5 mins or so engine restarted, but only briefly. With ignition on but engine not running the neutral light flickers and the tacho needle jumps, as well as a 'crackling' sound that seems to come from the lower rear RHS of the tank. Also fuel pump runs intermittently and clock resets to zero! After waiting engine will restart for anywhere between 1 and 10 seconds!

The same thing happened to me 2 weekends ago but after waiting and restarting I managed a good 80 mile ride without any problems, so assumed it was moisture or a bad contact somewhere. Bike had been used fairly consistently through the winter and has 30k miles on the clock.

Anybody out there got any clues? Any help gratefully accepted!

hi m8 look at the battery terminals as if they are loose you will get power but not enough to do anything with it . i went to a similar problem last week on a goldwing! and had it sorted in minits......best of luck let me know how you get on..:D :D :D :D

Aha, that's the side stand switch that is.Had you just washed it?
I've had four or five of them on my bike. Now I carry the end of the old switch, with the wires connected to each other, so I can by pass the switch altogether if needed. Bet it's that. The giveaway is the rev counter going nuts. Do tell when you find out. Just cut the two wires coming from the switch, and twist them together. If it's not that. you've just buggered up a good switch:D

Just been out to the garage to check the battery terminals, could have been a bit loose although I wouldn't have thought loose enough to cause a problem. In any case the bike started and ran ok but will have to wait tomorrow to give it a better run. Will check the side stand switch as well, must cop a lot of crap down there..

By the way the bike hasn't had the slightest problem until now, was playing around recently fitting lights so there could be some truth in the motto 'If it aint broke....'

Thanks for the replies.

Hi guys, checked the battery terminals last night, went for a test ride this pm and made about 500 metres before cutting out again! Struggled home and thought I'd take a look at the side stand switch. After burning fingers on the exhaust (As you do) i got the connector off, sprayed about a bit of WD40 and went off for another test ride, this time no problems although not game to go too far afield. Will check it out agaim tomorrow with another cold start, but it looks like Vern wins the cigar!

You mentioned that you have had this problem several times, is there a long term solution or is this something you just have to live with? By the way there are three terminals on the connector, if I wanted to by-pass the switch which ones would I need to connect?

Thanks again for your help, with any luck I'll be out for a blast tomorow morning..
