Well i thought i would wake the poor old girl today as it's her 10th birthday next week!
Bought my 1150 GS new in 2002 and used for Euro trip's upto 2009, then gave the German bird a full service, cleaned and put her to bed covered up at the back of the garage. All i've done every few weeks is trickle the gel battery every now and again. I've dug her out today, put some air in the tyres as they were down to 10 psi, had a sniff of the fuel tank and fired her up. First time!!!:D
I'm gonna get an MOT next week and tax it, so i can go to europe on it next month if i decide not to go on my R100R.
Tyres look ok, everything seems to work, light's etc, engine sounds sweet, as tappets etc were all done with oil folter/fresh oil before the big sleep.
Question is what shall i do if anything ? Still on original alternator belt at 22500 miles, i was just going to change the oil and road test bike for a 100 miles or so just to make sure all is ok.

So is it leave the new oil filter in 2009 and just do an oil change and ride, or shall i do other stuff ?:nenau:)

...and so would I....:rob

The 'UKGSER worry beads' will be along soon.Fuel/Perish/Seals/Corrosion/Death/Gloom...:blagblah:blagblah:blagblah

You've proved it works, now just ride it......:thumb

ok that's the plan then. It's been stored well anyway so i'll put some miles on before i go any distance.:thumb

Take spare belt, now you mentiomed it it will snap.

I've got a spare they gave me 6 years ago, that will be as knacked as the one that's on it i bet.
Is it easy to just cut the old belt off with a stanley knife, then run a new one over the wheels without farting about undoing stuff ?
I was thinking a bit like putting a chain back on a pushbike, start it off then turn the crank and bingo! Only put the bike in top gear and turn with the help of someone else.
To easy that i bet ?

Easy to do yourself... take off front cover then you'll see three bolts... loosen them... this drops the altenator....take off belt... put on new one.... lift altenator back up to correct tension (you should be able to twist the alt belt at is midline 90degs) then tighten bolts back up. Pop on cover and voila... done.

Splendid, i'll do it when i get back off my hol's (motorhome trip). I will have to take the Hepco and Becker crash bar's off no doubt. Now that's a pain!:blast
Thanks for the tip though:thumb

How sad to see a bike left for so long.

I've used other bikes to tour on, it's been cleaned/serviced and stored properly so it's still a good bike and ready to go on my next trip soon.
Funny it was 10 years old last month, but doesnt look it. I've had some good trip's on it over the years though.:D

Any pics of the bike ?

Last time it was used properly in Morocco 2008. It's ready to go again now though!:thumb

oil filter

Why not change the filter? makes no sense to me to chnnge the oil and not the filter

It had a full service before i put it away including the filter's, only did 20 miles after service then straight into storage. I've only dropped the oil incase of any moisture ingress, but it was fine.
