I want to remove the front wheel for the first time to get a new tyre put on. What is best practice and what pitfalls / inspections should I look out for?

Ta in advance.
Pete

Don't let the bike tip forward... it gets messy.

apart from that.. easiest job in the world. just do what the manual says. :thumb It's not called a 'quick release axle' for nothing.

Oh.. and don't even think about removing the rear wheel at the same time.. it gets even messier!!

Sockpuppet thanks for that. Appreciate it.

Little Red Rooster - er... that doesn't look good - how do I avoid that?

I usually use a ratchet strap around one of the garage roof rafters to which ever end I'm taking the wheel off (just in case....) ;)

Check your garage roof rafters are strong enough to support the weight first though otherwise you have a chance that you'll have the roof on your head as well as the bike

There's no way on earth the garage roof would support the entire bike, but it will stop it rocking too far on its stand and overbalancing. I speak from experience (leaning too hard on a torque wrench doing up paralever pivot pinions) ;)

Sage advice, I tried this with a landrover in our barn once, caused a few tense moments at the block & tackle took up the strain

I like to put the centre stand on a plank of wood to give a bit more clearance when removing the wheel, otherwise you can brush the mudguard and that can be bad and result in the aformentioned picture! I had both my wheels off and knocked the bugger over sideways in the garage:augie I had to put the wheels on before I could get it back up. Put a big dent in the exhaust:toungincheek
