1150 GSA won't start!

Just renewed the fuel pump and filter on my bike - 2003 twin spark GSA 1150. The bike turned over before I had the tank off but now all I'm getting is a rapid staccato sound, which I would associate with not enough battery power. I have recharged the battery but am still getting the same problem. I have checked the connection to the tank and the fuel guage etc seems in order - what should I do next (tried kicking the cat!)? Could I have a pinched wire somewhere?
 
1. What voltage are you getting from the battery when the starter is pressed?
2. Put the bike in high gear and rock it back and forwards until it has turned the engine over slightly; put in neutral and try starting it again.
 
Does the fuel pump prime when you turn the ignition on? Does sound like a problem with the starter motor/battery. Are the battery connections clean and tight?
 
Sounds to me like your battery has had it.

If the battery and starter motor terminals are tight and it still doesn't start in the morning, then jumpstart off a non running car/car battery.
 
Well - been away for a few days and have now had another go!
I have connected another battery with jump leads and the bike turns over fine - so the bike battery is u/s! The pump is not priming and I can hear the relay click off after a couple of seconds - also did a swap with the horn relay and replaced the fuse - all working! I have checked and cleaned the connectors at the tank and the fuel guage is reading two bars with five litres of fresh fuel in the tank. I can only assume the new (GSF) pump is duff.................I am thinking the only way to find out is to get another one and replace it. (I know it is wired correctly because I photoed the assembly before I took off the old one).
Any ideas would be helpful......!
 
Not something I'd recommend but I have used in the past and it's worked.

Spray easy start in the induction side whilst swinging the engine over. See if she fires/runs.

Also check - double check the fuel quickfits are fitted home properly.

The spade terminal RHS under the tank that you unplug to remove the tank can cause issues, ensure the female terminals are not slack or have broken wires. Heavyhandedness in opening the plug can splay the female terminals causing loss of contact.

Also try swinging your handlebars left and right and see if the pump comes on = ignition wiring in headstock area chaffed through.

Bike had been garaged for some time following a house move and time spent abroad. I had Phil, The Boxer Man, do a service on it but at the end it would not start - with the pump not priming. It was surmised to be deposits from the old fuel gumming up the works. Phil did not have the parts to sort the pump and there was the little matter of a nearly full tank to drain! Subsequently his mother was hospitalized. To cut a long story short I decided to do the job myself using some helpful advice posted on here and a u-tube video on how to do the job. I decided to renew all the connections, fuel tubing and filters at the same time - I also tested the old pump when taken off and it did not run when the terminals were connected to a battery.
 
Have you checked/replaced the fuel pump fuse? IIRC it's #5 but do check as I'm not 100% certain. The old fuel pump would probably have blown this on its way out.
 
He says the fuses have been replaced.


Hmmmmm without a known 'Good' start point, it become more difficult to trace.

Could even be the Hall sensor which can overheat & fail if the engine has been left running. Researching this topic will enlighten you.

Anyone near you who can swap parts over for elimination purposes - its easy just changing tanks over etc.

Sorry I'm running out of ideas.
 
Fuel pump not priming?

Remove the tank electrical connector and feed 12 volts direct to the pump.

+ ve 12 volts to the pin 2
earth to pin 1

If the pump doesn't run, it's toast. Get another.
