Is there an easier way to jump start an 1150GS than taking the tank off??
I've seen one of those power socket jump starters for cars that goes ciggie lighter to ciggie lighter (or power socket), anyone ever used one?

Buy the adv starter ppsts for around 10 quid. Easy to fit and make jump startingvas easy as attaching a jump lead:thumb2

Why are you jump starting it is the battery fooked?

If it is Seriously replace it! The Electronics do not like voltage spikes and current surges and it's not good for the starter either!

I still have some BMW DIN plugs and sockets left you could fit a trickle charger so you just come in and park up and plug it in and the charger does the hard work

IF you are going to Jump start one bolt undoes the starter cover and your positive lead goes on the top stud of the starter and Clamp the Neg onto something nearby don;t go for the battery negative

Same if you are using a modern car to start Clamp the positive to the battery or some have Jump points (Citroen Xsara Picasso) and the negative to a metal bit of engine or a chassis point

It's something to do with all the current not going thru the battery which may be duff

Been jump starting my 1150 for the last couple of weekends using the method above - i.e. positive to starter motor and negative to centre stand. Works fine - just make sure you've got a good set of jump leads. Didn't work with my first cheapy rubbish set.

Those are NOT jump starters.....they merely transfer the power from one battery to the other.

Try and jump start the 'dead' bike with one of those cables and you'll release the smoke genies from the wiring :rob

The easiest way of jump starting one is to just take off the starter motor cover rather than the tank......use the positive terminal on the starter, and clamp the negative from the donor vehicle onto a good earth... an exhaust bolt for example, as they are not painted and are decent connections.

Don't get used to jump starting the bike though....or one day, the battery will give up altogether and leave you stranded.......all you're doing is masking the problem rather than solving it.

Cheers for the replies. Will do the starter jobber method.
Battery not fooked, just been stood for a while and not quite enough jiuce to turn it over.

That was a very polite way of saying thanks for the fooking lectures:D

I drilled a hole in the starter cover, put in a bolt and fixed a heavy ish cable to it on the inside from the starter solenoid live feed. That leaves you with a bolt head on the outside of the cover to attach either jump leads if you need to take or give a start to someone, or to easily affix a battery charger if you're battery is flat.
Of course the bolt head is always live so needs protecting. There's probably someone done a professional accessory kit with a nice looking rubber wotsit to keep it all safe, but I covered it over with a coupla layers of silver gaffer tape.

The professional one is a genuine bm part and costs arond 10 squid :thumb2

I have fitted an "Anderson Connector" (look it up on fleabay) they come in various sizes, to the battery terminals via 18inch 6mm tails, the connector fits neatly under the side of the front seat. the connector comes in two halves the other half is soldered to a set of m/cycle jump leads replacing one set of crocodile clips. this make starting via a booster pack a complete doddle with no dismantling, as I am a donkey and keep forgetting to disconnect or turn off various accessories.
also I have another connector wired to my battery charger, for those rare occasions I actually remember to put it on trickle charge at the end of the day
Im working away so its not possible to add photos

Does this method work on an 1100?

Just curious, as it's a pain to take the tank off.

Exactly which bit of the starter motor do you attach the positive lead to?

I'm asking as I don't think my jump leads will fit under the tank without a lot of mucking about.

Cheers,
DA

That BIG copper Nut at the top is where the post attaches, so same for jump leads

Just a quick one to say...

Thanks for the help and advice, the starter motor tip worked like a charm. Quicker, easier and way more painless than having to move the tank.

Thanks to all.
