Ok so as all know my gs if from a member here.

bike has 14k on it. has had new clutch fitted by last owner on here and had service last year.

so i went drain oil last night

1st point noticed, oil lever was very low, baerly showing up on sight glass.

2nd - oil was very black (maybe all old oil from last time wasnt fully out)

3rd and worst - seems be very metallic. i am used to wet clutches so metallic oil seems fine. but as pointed out in my other thread by another member this is a dry clutch. so why o why am i getting metallic oil. could it be linked to the low oil so had bit more wear and tear or am i just being too bloody worried about simple things?

just have bike apart so giving bike a good going over to sort any issues out before start toruign on it and i am thinking if can store bike while garage is being built i wotn sell her

if its just a metallic sheen, never known my oil be very black, so I am guessing that its not been changed in a while,

anyhow I would change the oil and ride it, your too much of a worrier, worrie more about the gearbox, very rarely are there issues with the engine :D

well supposedly cahnged last year but as you said may be just a sheen

come to think of it was in a black container so that may not helped the look of the colour

looks bit more metallic than std car oil that changed last month. but hey as said i usually worry like hell about bikes. usually as i have bad luck witht hem but say be fine and may been too hot as someone let it run bit low

As long as its on the sight glass your fine. If its a little low just tilt the bike to the left and problem solved ;)

My oil is always very black at least as black as the crap that comes out of my focus diesel. If your really worried run some engine flush through there - but I wouldn't bother.

Get a magnet and pull it through the oil. If there are metal chunks then a problem....just looking metallic then not so. Bear in mind that the engine is still running in a 14k. Most use oil until 25-30k miles mark. I didn't believe it but mine used oil until around 26k miles now it doesn't use anyything between services.....they are all like it.

Two years ago shortly after I got my first boxer I found a few bits of metal in the oil. I was hoping it was just swarf from the manufacturing process breaking away. This was after a hard run through France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany. A lap of the Nurburgring was also done.

I drained the oil weekly for 4 weeks until there was no more metal. It's been fine ever since. Done another 40,000 miles in that time. It doesn't use any oil between services.

My 1150 RT does use a smidge of oil, perhaps 1/2 litre per 6,000 miles and it's oil level always appears to be low.

If I fill the RT with oil so the level is close to the top of the sight glass it will quickly burn off some to leave the level at the very bottom of the sight glass.

The GS does pretty much the same but it seems to settle at the halfway point.

Maybe your GS is like my RT and likes it's oil to be on the low side of OK.

The oil that comes out of both of mine is the colour and viscosity of warm treacle.

Stop worrying and ride the damned thing.
