Hi chaps,

My father-in-law send me an sms from next to the road yesterday with some trouble on his 1150. He was riding along and suddenly looked down and noticed his boot is very wet what he assumed was fuel. He made his way towards the offramp on the motorway and suddenly the bike just cut out completely. He freewheeled it towards the side of the road and upon inspection noticed the oil sight glass was gone and the wet on his shoe oil

Now I have heard of them leaking and even helped someone replace one before which was a piece of piss. I did have not heard about them actually popping out but pretty sure this has happened in the past as well. His main concern is what type of damage can he expect from running the motor without of oil and does the 1150 have any safety device when the oil pressure drops that it would just cut the motor out or would that be the bearings probably seized? The oil pressure light came on after he stopped.

He is not very mechanically minded so have no idea what to expect from the dealers. This is back in South-Africa and not here I might add.

Thanks

:beerjug:

Too many variables to say really, we dont know how much oil is still in there, the only thing to do really is to fit a new sightglass, top up the oil and see.

If the bike stopped of its own accord I'd say it's not good news - there is no automatic safeguard to shut the engine down if oil pressure drops so something else caused it to stop.

I'd hazard a guess that something siezed - loss of oil means over-heating as well as loss of lubrication. But as already mentioned there are too many possibilities to consider - it needs taking to an expert.

I would say absolutely don't be tempted to pop in a new sight glass, fill it with oil and try running it again - you stand to cause more damage.

That is all I wanted to know basically :D

My guess is the big ends seized or even worse :blast

It has been recovered to BMW and they will let my father-in-law know what has gone. He just had it serviced on 130 000 km's two weeks ago. He is meticilious about his bikes appearance and did not notice any weeping or leaks from the sight glass until it popped. Quite a bad thing to happen for something so cheap and trivial to replace :blast

Please let us all know...

...what the consequences were with the loss of oil please.

It could be beneficial information for some of us in the future, even though it's a right bummer for He Who Must Be Listened To.

Dont know, but I noticed mine had moved, tapped it back in and a smear of silicon, then replaced it when I had a chance, I guess they harden over time and mov, good luck:beer:

I got a slight weep in mine:eek:

Any Idea how long I got before disaster?
Does one have to empty all the oil to replace said glass?

BMW fitted a new oil sight glass, filled it up with oil but the motor won't turn. They reckon something seized and recommend a new motor instead of stripping this one down and then find they can't repair it.

Father-in-law found a motor with 18 000 miles on at a breaker. Going to get a BMW specialist (like Mr Steptoe :D ) to fit the "new" motor and then at a later stage strip the other one and see if it can be repaired or not. This will be either fixed and keep as a spare or sold to re-coup some costs :blast

BMW qouted £4830 for a new motor, the 2nd hand one complete is £1250.

Unfortunate thing to happen but BMW dealer just said they have never ever seen this happen to a bike :D

Shit happens.

Make sure that the oil-pressure warning light works. If it comes on when riding, STOP!!

My father-in-law got a sub assembly with all the neccessary parts for about £550 as 2nd hand parts are not that readibly available in South-Africa. An independent specialst is going to replace and sort it out in the next week so will give an update on this.

As I said to him last night it was just bad luck happening to him as there are GS's out there with double the mileage on and no problems. Maybe this is something that should be routinely replaced in any event as it is a cheap part and done in a couple of minutes :thumb2
