1150 or 1200 GS

I'm trading up from my R850R and cannot decide between 1150 or 1200 GS
Would appreciate any comments / help

Had both.
1200 was light(199kg claimed), flighty and poorly made (mine was, anyway, see lawsuit threat against BMW UK after 9 breakdowns in 8 months) too clever for its own good with the CAN-BUS system, but it was smooth, quiet, nice gearbox.
1150 is big, heavy (mine's the ADV with luggage, comes in at 250kg)
Tractor, more rugged, less smooth, but planted to the roadsurface.
Entirely up to you. Try both for a day if you can, not just a whizz round the block. Your physical size also makes a diference. I'm 6'4 and 17 stone. The 1150 is perfect for me.

I got the lemon 1200, many have done zillions of miles with no problems at all. Many 1150 owners have drive problems. Six of one, half a dozen of the other

I personally love my 1150 and wouldn't change it for the world.
OK, maybe a night with Mila Jovovich, some custard and a video camera, but that's about it.

Hi Paul, we seem to be from the same town, and i too fancy an 1150 or 1200 and not sure which to choose currently ride a R1150RS if you come to any conclusions please let me know

Is there a major problem with the 1200GS wiring system.
I've test rode a 1200 enjoyed it lots but keep coming across bad wir ing problems.

Nope.

As far as I'm aware there have been no failures of the CanBus system.

You've got to trick it a bit if/when you want to add extra lights and things, but that's very easy to do and well documented on here and elsewhere.

Perhaps you could expand on where you've "kept coming across bad wiring problems". (This is possibly not the best Board for that - I'd suggest opening a thread on the 1200GS Board).

Totally agree with Spanner Rash.

I too came from an R850R last year. Don't know if yours is the old type or newer 850, but if you have ridden both types I think the differences between 1150 / 1200 GS are comparable.

Strongly suggest you ride all of them so you make the right decision for you

Had 1150/1150adv and the 1200.
For me the 1200 just didnot float my boat seems some who have gone from a 1150 adventure to a 1200 are in the same boat,although not true of most who have gone to a 1200 adventure.
It really is one of ride em and see,I'm 5'9'' and with the low seat on a 1150adv i was ok.Try em out for a good few hours but as a BM owner you alredy you know the score.
