A friend of mine has just brought an 1150GS. We took the seat off yesterday and the rear section will not lock back into place....it was alright when he bought the bike.

I have put his seat on my 1150 and no problems, so it must be the lock. The lock seems to be OK with the spring claw appearing to operate properly, but U shaped bracket on the seat appears not to be locating. I have tried taking off the 6 rubber bungs so the seat will sit lower, but it still will not lock.

We intend to attack the problem tomorrow by comparing the two bikes, but I thought someone might have had a similar experience, of have an idea where to start looking.

Thanks for any help offered and I will post the solution if and when discovered.

Try pushing the seat down harder. Sometimes the front seat pushes the rear seat slightly and the latch does not catch. Push the rear seat forward and down whilst holding against the bike and it should be fine.

Try checking the rear seat lock fittings on the frame, make sure it hasn't twisted away from the correct position.

If it has just reposition it and tighten the locks bolts back-up.

Worked for me

Thanks for the swift reply Alex, but that was the first thing I tried.

To cut a long story short, a third party was allowed to remove and replace the seat. I suspect he used to much force to try and locate the seat, damaging the lock mechanism in some way. But looking at the lock on the bike, it seems to work OK but will not locate on the seat.

Strange!

Thanks PW.

Thats a possibility! Do you mean ajusting the 2(?) bolts I can see down the sit of the tool tray. Is it a simple matter of removing the tool tray to get at them?

Had difficulty with mine from new until it just wouldn't work. I removed the U-shaped catchment from seat and replaced it with a spacing washer under each fixing screw. This allows the locking bar a deeper reach into the locking latch. Seems to have done the trick - you will need to experiment with the spacers. Mine only needed a slight adjustment to get it working again.

seat lock

been there,

used to wallop mine to get it located then one day broke the rear plastic lug beside the lock mechanism. Check this hasnt been broken as the lock hangs low if it has and you need to lift it up from below with yer fingers as a temporary fix.

I've got the opposite problem.
I can't get the seat off the lock. The lock works and turns but doesn't seem to release........

I had exactly the same problem.

The guys at SPC told me that it was very common and fixed it in 3 minutes.

All they did was to put some small shims/washers under the U-bolt thingy, which effectively dropped it some 2-3 mm firther from the seat itself.

Clicked in properly and has never failed since ....

apart from when the whole mechanism of the lock had managed to come loose from the bike frame and needed to be tightened up.

In a word yes.

You should be sorted now with all the different scenarios posted.

Problem now sorted...thanks to everyone.

As PM said, the lock had moved slightly so the U would not engage. When re-located it worked but only after a hard thump on the seat (i saw the previous owner having to do this as well)

Thank you essbee. Two washers under the U means it now locates with a gentle push.
