Why oh why did I touch this thing! I have a big trip coming up next week, so as part of my preventitve maintenance I thought I would give the starter motor a quick check over as it sometimes seems a little sluggish. Followed the excellent sticky and soon discovered what the problem was. The plastic brush holder had a hairline crack, and as I took the brushes out it broke in two :(.
The rest of the starter was in perfect condition as well!
So before I buy another does anybody:
Have an old starter motor that is knackered and can sell me the plastic brush holder
or
Know where I can buy just this part
or
Know where I can get the best price on a replacement.

Thank you kindly

send Ash a pm i seem to remember him fannying around with some starters you never know he might have something:)

If your stuck i have an old starter motor with a worn gear on it and i will strip the bit off you need for you

Have you got anyone near to you who does starter overhauls.

The starter's built by Valeo, and is basically the same as a car one (can't remember the model, but I think the car one spun the other way)

Thank you very much ZDAVEUK, I would like to take you up on that offer. PM on its way to you.

Chad and Neil, thanks for all your help,

Most dealers can get them to..you need to release the clip when you take it apart or it brakes like that. The spring clip helps hold the plate in place.

Lesson learned

If it aint broke DON'T FIX IT!!!!

Thanks again for the replys (except you davegs!!, by the way that turntable I bought off you works a treat!).
Ive just sent you a pm zdaveuk, thanks for all your help.:thumb2

This part is very brittle indeed, and I can definately say that mine had a hairline crack right from the start/or has happened in the past 28kmiles. (ive had the bike from new). At least all my magnets are nicely stuck in place and this has given me the chance to have a peep where the starter mounts for any leaking fluid etc (its nice and clean).

Watch when fitting the new one that it doesn't crack again, the metal spring locates on the starter body, not just the plastic brush holder. I found the easiest way to put it back together was to hold the starter in a vice, assemble the brushes and the plastic body in place, then put the spring on. This is also made much easier with a second pair of hands.

Good luck with it.

Got the brush holder this morning, thanks Dave :thumb2, all fitted and working great. Well worth remembering that the brush spring clips to the tang on the starter motor housing. Do this wrong and it will go back together but crack the brush holder when you tighten the brush cover.

Same thing happened to me last year. I got my local mechanic to order me an overhaul kit. Came with the plastic retainer and new brushes and some other bits and bobs. I think it cost me about £30.

Fatnfast, I know you've already fixed your problem but I just wanted to let everyone know you can buy some spares for these starters.

Regards
