UK again Pah!..
At the weekend I noticed as I turned the ignition on that the rider information area (I am sure it is called something different) Did not power up, a quick off/on of the ignition and it was OK. Tonight I started the bike and it came up OK, then I noticed it said 18:13 all the time, showed 0 gear and the temperature gauge never came up, so I have half a broken display, not sure about the fuel as I filled it right up this morning.

I assume it is borked, but is this a known issue? It is still in warranty but I dont want to wait another 1200 miles before it's next service to get it fixed.

If its under warranty then get it down to your main dealer.

You must have a late 1150 if its still under warranty.

Water ingress can cause a lot of problems with the RID.. rider information display.

If you do a search there is a small hole that can be drilled to allow drainage.

Yes it I picked it up January 29th 2005 in readiness for a planned trip we were doing, however we did not count on my wife breaking her leg very badly 4 days later, that was a bit of a blow!

I am quite lucky regarding warranty work, the front fork brace is slightly corroded and this has just packed up in time so to speak, the tip regarding the hole is handy and I will do a search.

Now I just have to hope anything else that has to go wrong will do it now :)

There is a drain hole in the RID unit, you don't have to drill it.

The hole gets blocked, and the unit retains water/moisture, not ideal for PCB circuits.

Also try unplugging the RID connector, under the tank at the front/ top of all the "plugs", clean up the plug connections. No need to remove the tank, just pull it back.

Thanks for that, I will give it a try this weekend, s'funny how I just ride the KTM but spend so much time thinking feck I wonder which gear I am in on the GSA now the display is fixed at '0'

Never had such luxuries in the old days!

I've sussed it!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's a problem caused by the HID lights. If the battery isn't 100% then they don't fire up immediately. You'll hear a clicking coming from the bulb (it may well be a connection problem aswell). My engine fires up fine but if the HID hessitates it can cause the info display to lock up.
To rectify it, remove the 3rd fuse (as your stood on the clutch side of the bike) with the ignition turned off. That will turn the display off and it resets itself. You have to do it with the ignition off otherwise the engine powers the unit and it doesn't reset (the fuse is blue on my bike). Try it and see :thumb
I guess it's become an issue as the weather is colder and I always ride with the lights on.

Brilliant - I will try it tomorrow, a virtual beer and pizza will be winging its way over to you shortly!

Cheers

Yeehaaaa!! - have two beers

Many thanks for that :D

Now my only concern is I am not sure it is battery related, but I like your theory so I will stick with it.

My only other question is which fuse do I take out to reset the clock to the right time? :P :P

Thanks for the beer :beerjug: Mrs Flip had the Pizza and said that she was doing it for my own good :(

I'm sure it is battery related because Rollinsdan has HID's but rides everyday and although his set up exactly the same, he is having no problems. Might be worth going for a spin without lights tomorrow (daytime of course), or trying an optimate. I'd go for the latter but the garage has no electricity to it :( .

Glad to be of assistance, I have emailed the seller of the kit to see if there might be another potential issue but I think he'll confirm my thoughts. I'll let you know if I get anymore info. At least you didn't have to strip it all down to find out that it's a 1 minute job :o

I use mine every day but cannot turn the lights off as dip is always on. My HID does squeek when it first starts and takes maybe a second to hit full intensity but I assume that is a quirk of HID's.

I will keep an eye on mine and see what happens.

CHAAAARGE!!

Hi Flipfly,
on an 1150 , how can you turn off the lights -dip beam is surely "always on" ? Which is a bugger if your battery might be on the low side when you come to start the bike. !!
I just fitted the Maplin special offer solar trickle charger, 'cos I have no volts in the lock-up...yet to find out how well it works though.

If you was that worried about your battery you could always pull the plug out the dip beam unit....?
There is a load relief relay in any case, which cuts power to the lights when you hit the starter...

oh dear!

Seeing as the original post was over a year ago i think we can assume that Flip has cured the problem  But well done anyway.

Sorry guys im a complete dick! it was flip that recommended this to me a few weeks ago :blast
Memory of a fecking goldfish!
im going away now, what a plonker :hide

Hi zerocool,
bought my Maplin solar trickle charger about a month ago or so, in Nov 2007, for the £10 sale price, so they might still be available now -always worth a look in maplins anyhow...always find something I never knew I needed !

Flipfly, you're a star! I just fitted a HID conversion yesterday and had the same problem when I started the bike to return from my first trip out. I was half way through dismantling everything when I thought to check the GS User site and weyhey there was the answer. Fuse out-fuse in - all sorted. But I don't know why it happened, my battery is in good shape and I use an Optimate.

I read somewhere that the HID ballasts can upset the RID if mounted too close to it.
