1150 Travel Insurance !!

Hopefully this is ok on here.

I'd love to take my old 1150 abroad later this year (2002 and 80,000 miles)
But I've been getting some quotes for breakdown/Recovery whilst away. The replies, into several hundreds for 18 days or so away, seem a little "steep"

Has anyone any suggestions or experience in going abroad and getting this cover ?

If yer get insured with Carol Nash the breakdown cover is included for up to 90 days in europe

Have you tried the normal suspects like the AA/RAC ?

Does your insurance not cover the bike , I know the likes of Carole Nash, Footman James etc all provide free breakdown cover as part of their policies .

Only thing you have to make sure of with any poicies is that some may still have age limits of the vehicles they will cover.

I know Carole Nash include it, but my insurance isn't due until Oct and I want to go away in August !!

I'm already a member of the RAC, so I suppose I could try them. A standard on line quote from them was over £215

I got quoted 96quid (after a little haggle) for 10 days via Rac... defacto 5.. no hassle with age of bike or repat to the UK. Didnt need it though never missed a beat....

Only needed my breakdown cover once in 13 years of riding my 1150, that was in its first year for a flat battery. Having said that the peace of mind that comes from having cover is worth far more than the premium. When it comes to getting a good price on insurance it pays to go old technology. I phoned and the price I paid including European breakdown was less than the on line price without. Don't forget that the price comparison sites might be convenient but they get a healthy commision -guess who pays for that. Last time I paid 135 pounds including breakdown & full kit cover, but then I am a old git with a beard!

I have only had to use mine once and that was when the FD shit itself in Switzerland, Carol Nash ( via the AA)were great recovering the bike twice (once to the dealers once back to the Hotel when the dealers decided they couldn't even look at it for weeks!) and after I fixed the FD myself, the AA agreed to cover the bike back home (something about the cost of repatriation being sky high and they were prepared to take a punt )

ADAC...Covers everywhere mainland Europe including here . German company so extremely efficient & easy to deal with, cover is included for the likes of Albania all other 'unusual' destinations.
Forget about the RAC, they will add on (around £170 for a 3 week trip) to their already over expensive premium for European cover & it still won't provide recovery for certain parts of eastern Europe, I also have Carol Nash insurance but prefer to use ADAC abroad if and when required.

Which is the point the OP may be making.... I've used Vehicle Rescue Direct in the past , but they have a 15 year age limit.... so that'll be no good for my 2001 1150GS

Thorough service before leaving home, you're unlikely to have a problem that can't be sorted for less than the premium. I stopped shelling out for cover when the bikes got a bit too old (like yours) A well maintained bike is the answer, some use that gloopy stuff in their tyres to prevent flats, I carry a fix kit on the road (plug and canister type) which I had to use once in over 100k miles, when the rear on the ST1300 went 20 miles from my place.

Went to Poland last year on my then 16 year old 1150GS, & found short term breakdown cover through ETA. (www.eta.co.uk)
Cost about £45 I think, expensive for a weeks cover, but cheap for peace of mind. Of course I didn't need it!!

Try https://www.startrescue.co.uk/ - they will let me get a quote on my old R1150GS 2000 year at the same rate as newer vehicles. Small print in the policy document says 10 years though.

Then they have a separate Classic Vehicle section and describe a classic as over 20 years. The policy document linked on that page is the same as the newer vehicles so I think this is a mistake.

I use them for my Tracer & car as they are a) cheapish and b) recommended by a number of review sites including Which? Not called them out though. Therefore, if I had an older vehicle I would at least ring them to see if they could offer cover on their Classic policy and I'd ask to see the actual Classic policy document before committing myself. They do annual and short term policies.

Don't believe the it wil be fine and never break down bollocks that some people spout out, for peace of mind get cover it is worth it .

All it needs is an unrepairable puncture on an Autobahn and the recovery costs will ruin your holiday never mind a final drive/gearbox/clutch /electrical issue which result in the bike needing repatriation

17 yrs this month of continuous 1150 GS ownership gives me a little information and experience to not spout bollocks........ grow a pair
