Hi All,

I come here to the font of all wisdom about GS's.

Does anyone have any experience with repainting the valve covers from an 1150GS Adv? I have one on which the paint is bubbling and starting to flake :blast. It looks like the paint has come away from the undercoat in a lot of places (maybe heat related or poor surface treatment or both).

The three spacer buttons on the plastic head protectors on both sides have molded themselves into the paint as if it was not completely dry when they were installed. So the paint seems to have softened at some point (when hot?).

Has anyone had this happen to their Adv rocker covers and had them resprayed successfully?

What's the best way to strip the old paint from the magnesium cover - bead blasting, paint stripper or something else?

What's the colour code for the covers (I think it's called Ferro)? Is it available in a heat resistant version?

All help/suggestions/comments welcome.

Thanks,

Graham

Mine were bead blasted which gives the best surface for the paint to bond too. You could use an etch primer if you were really anal about it but it isnt required.

I just used normal enamel paint, not even heat resisting. The rocker covers dont get that hot relatively so no need. I put on 10 coats of enamel and have had no problems in 8000 miles so far. Its been harden wearing than i thought too. No flaking or chips on it.

I used a heat gun to speed up the painting process, i.e i got the parts hot with the heat gun, then one coat, hot again to cure it fast but before it was completely cured the next coat... this tied the coats together better.

Best would be proper powder coating, shouldnt be too much. In the uk it would cost around £20 or so for the blasting and coating!

Thanks vilguy, so I might look at getting them bead blasted then. Any thought on the colour code to match the OEM colour?

Pink would look nice.

I did mine black as you can never go wrong with that. That oem colours a funny like slate colour though isnt it.. grey/blue Im sure someone on here has posted up the correct colour for it before if you do a search, and it was quite recent from memory.
