I hae a 2002 1150 GS with ABS I think its the ABS II it makes the funny clack noise when pulling away, it has the BMW marked calipers, I think they are EVO calipers, I am getting it ready for MOT and it has 2 sized pistons in the left hand caliper, I am a bit nervous about bleeding the breaks, has anyone any advice on successfully bleeding the brakes particularly the front

why do you think bleeding the brakes will unsieze the pistons ?
hint ...it won't.

if you are doing 1 side you might as well do both , they have done the same mileage.
has it got braided hoses ? if not , get some .

bleed as per a normal brake.

If you’re not confident in bleeding brakes, then don’t touch them.

Take the bike to a someone who knows how to service brakes.

I meant after I rebuilt the calipers I realise bleeding the breaks wont unsize the calipers, ok I will give it a go thank you

we have to cater for the lowest common denominator , so i assume everyone is stupid , until they prove otherwise.

ps gonna give information .....give it all , not part of it.

If you rebuilt them? The Brakes I mean

How long ago?? When you reassembled them could you press the pistons back in with your fingers only? Did you use a light skim of rubber grease?

Evo were crap for sticking if exposed to Salt for any long period, Salt gets behind the outer wiper ring and the hydraulic one too sometimes, But they all need stripped and cleaned!

Has the ABS Brake block got 2 Bleed nipples or Six??

In my experience with the "Evo" brakes (ie 320mm diameter discs as opposed to (iirc) 300mm on the earlier bikes) as fitted to my Rocksters : it's the Tokico callipers that tend to be somewhat problematic in that regard. The Brembos, as fitted to the GSA, are much better. My thoughts are that the Tokicos have a much greater difference in the diameter of the pistons and the piston-bores so they allow a lot more crud to be in, and thus work its way behind the seals. I've done the swap 3 times now and Motorworks know me well enough that they always correct me when I order discs... :D (Ideally you need to use the same discs as the GSA as well. I've run the bike with the standard discs and they work fine, but the swept area is slightly different).

(I'm sure you know all this Dr. Farkoff - I was more writing it out for other readers. :) )

The two difference between the later 1150GS and GSA brakes (post Brembo) catches a lot of people out.
BMW calipers and BMW tokico calipers, skinny discs and “standard” discs ,
And different brake pads , either Ferodo 2124 or 2125
:D :D

Hello my ABS unit has 2 bleed nipples I have just rebult the brakes in the last week with new seals and red silcone grease they are all free now and I have bled the brakes including the ABS unit front system first and all seems ok and it passed its MOT yesterday thanks to everyone for the advice, I could not get the braided lines in time but I have them on order
