'Andy VFR' isn't really correct now as I've sold the VFR, so I'm ready to get a different bike!

I've been looking at a 1150GS for sale privately today. I've a few questions which some of you may be able to help me with:

1) The engine is black in places (whereas i was expecting it to be silver all over), i think I'm right in saying that the black is an option?? can anybody shed any light??

2) The engine number doesn't match up with that on the V5 - is anybody aware of how to check if an engine has been changed legitimately? (e.g. warranty claim) The DVLA couldn't help. More to the point I want to know if the engine is part of a stolen bike!

3) What do BMW panniers cost? I've got a set of new'ish GIVI ones but am not sure if these can be fitted?? This plays a part in the price i should pay as some 1150 GS' are for sale with BMW panniers.

4) The shaft drive seemed a bit 'klunky' when setting off or when coasting and letting the clutch out in 1st. Is this normal?? Also it was hard to get into 1st when cold - normal too???

Any help much appreciated!

Yeah, black is an option

If it was done by BMW then it will be in the dealer network computer, any dealer can access it.

Check out the other threads on panniers, loads of info, prices and options out there, new and used.

If you are not used to shaft drive you will find a few clunks, and as you will here on here often, they all do that sir! If the engine is running at over about 1250 rpm which is normal cold, then they are a bit stiff, mine needs a good kick sometimes, but having ridden some bikes with 20-30K on them it gets better with age!

Andy,

You're right, the Black is an option, though the pots and Shaft drive are still sliver.

As for numbers, don't know, if you're not happy........walk !:(

I would think that Givi will do the bits and Bobs to allow you to fit the Panniers you have (Sorry Spanish Bob:p )

Shaft Drive Klunky..........oh, they all do that Sir;) just depends how klunky klunky is as to whether or not it's klunky or not........if you get me drift:D

If the engine numbers don't match the log book, run away as fast as you can,It's a pup. Plenty more out there.

....and do the world a favour and let the local Constabulary know about it. They will check it out ....at least they should check it if it is that suspect.

Well batted. Many people would not have made this simple check.

Did you ask the owner for an explanation? Even if it is legit, the owner has committed an offence for not notifying the DVLA.

As Gecko says, grass him/her to the fuzz. If the engine is stolen the number may show up on their database.
