1150gsa - gsa centre stand to gs stand /04 heated grips

Hi everyone hope we are all well

I'm just doing a few bits on my 2004 1150GSA,

First job I want to do with having the GS ohlins (940 rear shock) an gs front ohlins shock. is sort the centre stands.

I've got the full assy from a GS centre stand fitting bits, side stand an all brackets.

Quick question which bit's do I need to use bracket wise from each assy?

The bit's I'm unsure on is the side stand bracket and the mounting bracket right? Do you use the GSA or the GS bits? Just waiting on the stand turning up

One other quick one for anyone that had a 2004, heated grips wise, mines an march build did yours have the vertical ribbed grips or the later style flat ones? Motoworks said the later ones came in during 03, but the BMW EPC shows both types.

2004 BUILT Bikes had ribbed Heated Grips, maybe changed autumn 2004 and 2005 bikes had the flatter (non ribbed) Heated grips, as far as I know

Steptoe is your man you the centre stand wizardry

Fitting a GS stand to an Adv right (brake) side bracket is a reet bugger to pull the spring onto, IIRC you need the GS right side centre stand bracket, but the GSA right side bracket will work, but the spring is like a bow string

Thanks mate it confused me when they said that, I'll stick with the ribbed ones when I get some new ones. I've got a full set of brackets fitments and stands on the GS one I've bought inc the side stand. Glad I bought the one I did now

Surprisingly (or not in the case of BMW's) there's a lot of fecking around involved.. Using the GS center stand brackets mean you lose the brackets for the ADV sump plate.... plus there's a few other surprises in store for what should be a very simple job..

I just persevered with putting the oem spring on a GS stand and onto the GSA bracket - it was a struggle and 2 man job

Sounds like I'm gonna have a fun day install figuring it out when the bits arrive lol

any tips always appreciated ahh drat I didn't think about the ADV sump plate brackets drat.

Incase anyone is after doing this in the future.

The GS Height centre stand came yesterday to match the lowered GS Spec Ohlins and with a tip from Lee on the 1150GS FB group who sent me some pictures of his GS shackle (not the GSA one)I modified it by removing 1 third from it to compensate for the difference in the mounting lug distance that the shackle fastens onto, after seeing that it was a really straightforward job with a Dremel and a file.

It's best to put the springs on once at a time, larger first then use a zip tie to pull the smaller one through carefully.

Another tip if you have a small garden rake with 4 or 3 struts you can hook a spring puller onto it an it'l help get enough purchase to pop the springs on.

Obv all at your own risk etc,

Allowed me to retain all the GSA Bracketry and the GSA Side stand.

good thing is now it pops on the stand real easy infact easier than alot of lighter bikes which surprised me.


Still waiting for the local BM Dealer to get some bit's in so I can fit my stock exhaust on hopefully they hurry up ha!

Also helps to hook the breather tubes out of the way of the spring puller like I did in this pic


Next step I wanna do now is check what plugs are in her, n do the 56k service, looking at the paperwork as well the clutch fluid is due,

An I'm gonna check the FD out as well now I can get her on the stand.

Oh yep on the grips Motoworks do BMW ones that allow you to replace them on the heated grip elements if you are careful. About 10 quid a side so nice an affordable.

Just a heads up for anyone that sees my above comment the grips from motoworks currently are Ariete and have differences to the gen grips. There is a BMW grip available off one of the older bikes that should do the trick I'll update more when I know more
