1150GSA Tank on 1150GS - not!

Hi buddy im in leigh on sea i have an 1150gsa you are welcome to come and compare your tank to mine..
 
OK - the problem is that the rear mount has been pushed forward at some time - this causes it to be misaligned with the bracket on the subframe and the sockets for the side panel to be too close together.

Here's what yours looks like:

You just have to work out a way to bend it back to its original position without damaging the paintwork (which looks excellent, BTW)... :thumb2
 
I am pretty certain after all the feedback here, that when the paint-shop pulled out the dent, they used the mounting arm to support the tank while they were pulling the hammer, and it's been bent then, rather than during the accident or from being dropped.
I will take it back tomorrow and ask them to pull it back.

Take the small black plastic side panel with you that sits in those rubber grommets, tell them to pull the arm back so that the male lugs on the panel line up with the holes in the grommets :thumb2

...and make sure they don't make the holes match by bending the front one forward... :D
 
There you have your answer GS and GSA tank mount dimensions are identical !

You can fit an adventure tank on an 1100 too if you change the beak arrangement a little

You don't have to make changes to the 1100 beak. It is a straight swap

Early plastic tank 1100 are slightly different and have specific rubber bridging pieces (I'm assuming this is what the good Dr is referring to.)
 
Yup the plastic tank has recesses and specific rubber joints

I was out looking at a 94 Bike there with that horrible Creme and dark bronze stripe paint job to try and work out what the difference was

DON'T hit the mounting tab by any means!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is spot welded to the side of the tank and will crack the welds and the tank will leak.
I just did a serious repair to an Adventure tank that had the bracket hit.
Agreed, the bracket looks to be at the wrong angle, but why?

Has the tank been filled with fuel? No leaks?

FYI the ADV tank is a plug and play swap with the std GS tank.
I have done a couple, one of which is my own
 
Thinking about it.... That mounting lug is not a only fixed to the underside of the tank, it is also fixed to the side of the one lower lobe of the tank.

It would have taken a huge force to bend it, and will need the same to put it back to where it should be. As GS Addict says above, make sure the guys doing it are careful not to tear the spot welds when doing so.

I have done a couple, one of which is my own
I cannot see that there are many options,
Applying heat will damage the paint,
If it cracks it will need welding which will damage the paint,
OP might as well just knock the thing back to its original position,it'll either crack or not:comfort
As stated,with hindsight he should of tried it on the bike prior to painting,:rob
If it were mine I'd just twat the thing backwards and deal with the consequences :D

Looking at the eBay pictures, you can clearly see it's the mounting that's bent... It's the same before and after your paint job.

So, its not the painters fault.

Option 1 - Sherlocks refund and you suck up the paint costs.
Option 2 - beat the shit out of it and deal with the after effects (paint/split welds)
Option 3 - have some heat applied ( make sure tank is vapour free ) and have the paint damage repaired.

looking at the damage to the top of the tank, I reckon the bike has flipped due to the GSA crash bars....

You can see from this picture the mounting bracket is bent...

Bit pisspoor really, you'd of thought "No Shit Sherlocks"would have noticed that and made OP aware...
 
Fecking obvious ........ Surely it's easier, simpler and cheaper to just make up a small mounting bracket to attach to the original mount on the frame.
Instead of fecking around hitting the tank or bending the arm and no chance of any leaks and no wasted money on the respray.
Have a word with james sherlock and see if he can offer some financial recompense for your problem.

I'd certainly expect a favorable response from JS... after all, the tank was sold in a *damaged* state!
