Interesting report in this month's Moto magazine here in France.
The owner of a 2001 R1150R with 36K km, had a gearbox failure, caused by a failed bearing. He had been the owner from new and has always had the bike dealer serviced.
The dealer offered to pay half the cost of the new 'box, (priced at 2400 euros), the owner then telephoned BMW, and the dealer's contribution was raised to 60%.
The dealer's labour charge for the gearbox replacement was 300 euros.
The owner wrote to the magazine asking if they considered the offer reasonable(!), to which they replied positively, stating that it was unusual for any manufacturer to honour a claim this far out of warranty.
It would be interesting to see if this case was the norm, in France, with a gearbox failure.
I had a test ride on a 1200GS at the local BMW dealers and raised the question of any problems they have had with the bikes so far. The mechanic, who I know quite well, said there had been one gearbox failure in the first batch of bikes they'd received, after that no problems!
(I've still got my 1100, no plans to change yet!).
