A mate of mine sent me this last night, any ideas?

Hi Paul, a bit of help please. RT won't start. All the dash lights but no temp/fuel display. Doesn't do anything on the start button anybody seen this before? Not started pulling it apart yet. Thinking side stand switch, clutch switch etc any ideas.

My thoughts were either kill switch problem or side stand switch....

Aye, or the fuses.

I'd start with those, as they're so easy to check.
Then pulling the side stand switch connections off and joining them, then common sense from there.
Is the fuel pump priming?

.... Is the fuel pump priming?
I asked him that and he replied "don't know, it makes so much racket with the brake servos etc". :D

If he was nearer I would pop over.... I'll get him to check the basics but thought I ask in case there is a common issue with these :)

Engine should still turner over if fuel pump is FUBAR....

It's as if the the side stand is down or the kill switch is off..... on my 1100 both will stop the fuel pump and prevent the start button from turning the engine over.

Anyone know what the 3 wires do on the side stand switch?

Plug on r/h of frame under the tank, corroded.
I had a similar fault on my bumblebee a while back, the pins had furred up in the plug/socket.

How old is the battery?

My GS wouldn't start in IOM & the RAC sent a guy to check it over. The ignition powered everything but then it all shut down when you hit the starter button. A multimeter indicated good charge in the battery (12.6v) but it couldn't supply the current to turn it over. It started fine with a booster pack on the battery. One new battery later & it runs a treat.

My suggestion would be to try a booster to start it then take it from there.

That's not very helpfull, identifying the correct symptoms is a crucial to being able to isolate the problem. If he doesn't know the difference between a fuel pump priming for 2 seconds and the whine of the brake servo, which only occurs when the brakes are operated, then remote fault finding is going to be difficult.

Has the bike got an alarm/immobiliser?

if he has lights but no RID and starter won't work? Does he have a neutral light?

it's likely to be kill switch or sidestand down and in gear sort of thing

servos should not whine once they have checked themselves

one fuse to check Fuse 3 if the timeclock is not working
