12,000 mile service cost

I agree, when I had a 1200 changing the pads is laughably easy even for someone as mechanically cack-handed as me. However I did get Vines to replace my front pads in my F700GS one winter as I couldn’t be bothered and the pistions in one of the callipers was seized - new calliper fitted next day under warranty. I could tell it felt like it was sticking but expected to have to stump up for new seals or even pistons so that was all right

My 12000m was just short of £400 at Alton but had a couple of extra jobs doing while it was in.
At those rates what I've saved by servicing my R1150GS my self over the last 16 years has nearly covered the purchase cost of the bike. I had it dealer serviced for the first 24k i.e. the first 10 months of ownership, by the time the 30k service was due it was out of the (12m) warrantee so decided to do it myself and have done ever since. Now has 109k on it and is running sweet.
Quick calculation using the AJ cost above means I've saved 7 (12k) services @ £600 each = £4,200, plus 7 (6k) services @ £250? each = £1,750. So total saving in the region of £5,000 after deduction of cost for oil, filters etc. Bike is probably worth around £2,500. £5000 + £2,500 = £7,500. Paid £7,600 for the bike new from AJ in 2001 so 'depreciation' cost for 17 years & 109,000 miles £100. Absolute bargain and that doesn't include the savings made by not purchasing extended warrantees.
Well that's what I tell my wife ;-). Happy days.
Are you still alive or did you hit a wall the first time you pushed the brake pedal
18 mins in total to change the pads and around 30 seconds on each to push the pads back against the discs before moving it...
However, still paid £260 last week for a 6,000 mile dealer service - hurts like fcuk.
Will probably stop the dealer service once the AUB warranty expires.
I just paid £514 for a major service at Inverness Motorrad (Arnold Clark)
Was the last one i'll be having done as the warranty is up next month and i'll do it myself in future as I think i'll have the bike long term; the following work was done:
Oil and Filter
New Air filter
New Spark plugs
Valve clearances
Front and rear brake fluid change
Rear diff oil change
Had the service recall completed for the rear diff, breather plug thing too at the same time.
Parts £105.56
Labour £322.77
The rest was VAT
Looking at other dealer costs especially down south, seems we are paying a premium up here for the labour costs

Although brake fluid and valve checks are reasonable so I pay for them
Did do a valve check myself but without the BMW tools my measurements weren’t particularly trustworthy

Another one here for DIY service, it’s not difficult, just take your time. I had the brake pads and pins out a couple of weeks ago, I just had to lightly sandpaper the pins, as they get tad of oxidation build up on them, then a smear of anti squeal paste and reassembled, pads were all good. It took less than a hour from start to finish. The value check is probably the tricky one, but again just take your time, and recheck your readings. The wetheads almost never go out of spec on the value clearance.
That’s not bad for good service.
