Over the weekend my mate's 1200 expired with a huge cloud of smoke followed by a nasty noise. Upon inspecting the plugs, one was found to be completely bashed in on the end indicating a dropped valve ( i think). What does anyone rekon the damage might be, and will BMW cough up on a 6000 mile only bike 2 months out of warranty.:( :thedummy

Bad luck for your friend, I would hope that BMW would help out on the repair as a good will gesture, he'll have to keep his fingers crossed:thumb2 As it does'nt sound cheap:(

Shep

I think it will be..

PAINFULL in the wallet .. sadly i think he will be pretty lucky to get it done for free if its 2 months out of the warrenty.. however he might have a better luck if it also recently had a service.. he didnt run out of oil did he??

I hope its not as bad as it sounds. Good luck with it. I would say kindly approach the dealer and be very courteous and polite and hope they go for "maintaining their reputation" option.

Might be wrong then...

Judging by that link I could hopefully be wrong and your mate might stand a good chance. Good luck..

Maybe not so painful on the wallet...

Sorry to hear your friends experience, I know just how gutted he's going to be feeling right now...

I don't know what route BM are going to take, but if they start talking about new short-blocks give me a shout as I have one sitting in my garage. It's been completely striped and inspected and I can't find anything wrong with it short of the fact the flywheel was missing two teeth.

If its needed give me a shout.

John

Thanks for that John, I'll keep you posted.

IMHO, with that sort of mileage and if the bike has BM service history and looks like it's been looked after they should be honoring the warranty. A friend at work here had a crank go on a Corolla something like a year out of warranty and with 50k on the clock. It did however have full Toyota service history. Toyota gave him a new engine. We should expect the same service from bike manufacturers.

Hummm you'd think so wouldnt you...

I had a Peugout 406 V6 Estate – 5 or 6 years old, lots of miles 150,000+ but religiously main dealer serviced every 20,000 as per the book. The car was seemingly flawless, the only issue I had was the cooling fans had packed up but I replaced those two weeks before I traded it in for my Land Cruiser.

I took it out for a test drive having replaced the fans, drove 20 miles noticed a knocking from the engine bay (for the first time). I assumes I’d left a tool in a well in the engine bay so stopped and had a look under the bonnet, nothing… put the car in reverse and backed up, next thing I knew the engine sheered two of its three mounts and dropped out of the engine bay.

£200 for repairs, spoke to Peugout about it… their response – “what do you expect?”

Well I know the car had a lot of miles, but I didn’t expect the engine to drop out…

Dodgy Valves

This is happening quite a lot at the monent...
I think this is the third or fourth on this forum alone.
i've heard of RT's and RS's having probs as well.
maybe BWM UK should be looking very deeply into this.
All the threads collated would give you a good chance of making BWM face up to the problem...if they want to ignore it under a warranty claim

EG Renault stated NO Probs with bonnet catch on Clios for over 12 months:spitfire
Now ALL have been recalled:augie

Not the first one, a few have been sorted under warranty.
