Recommend me a blow up sleep mat. Not exped though

To the OP. Have you gotten a mattress yet ? I have enough anxiety these days and now I am having trouble sleeping thinking your slumber under the stars in 100% comfort is in jeopardy. There are plenty of good ones out there. For the sake of our emotional health Pick one! PLEASE ! Just pick one! I wish you very good luck in your camp mattress selection :campingbnige
Too funny, pmsl after reading it

I have been in PM contact with the OP. He has almost sorted his sleeping arrangements out. I'll let him fill in the rest. As for me, I have gone for a RAM Stratosphere 4 and pillow from Taunton Leisure. £136 posted for both. Wide enough, same size as Kilo, separate pillow and hard wearing denier..
The Lowdown:
  • Weight: (Regular Wide) 840 g
  • Length: (Regular) 183 cm
  • Width: (Regular Wide) 64 cm | (Long Wide) 64 cm
  • Thickness: 8 cm
  • R-Value: 3.8
  • Fabric Main: 75D Recycled Polyester outer fabric with internal TPU Coating and fluorocarbon free DWR
  • Insulation: Stratus™ R 100% recycled polyester 160gsm insulation
  • Insulation Type: Stratus™ R 100% recycled polyester 160gsm insulation

:monkeypizLotta energy expended to just pick a sleeping mat. Just think if we put the amount of energy towards solving world hunger or a cure for the common cold. We probably would’ve licked both of those in half the time of this thread’s life.

Im all in now. Let’s keep it going. I’m hooked on cutting edge camp mattress technology.

Just ordered the same, cheers adventuredon

This is not a camp mattress, but it might help bump the insulation up a bit. Last year I found extra large solar shades at either Lidl‘s or Aldi‘s for under 10 USD. Super thin and very flexible foam with foil on one side. I’ve carried that with me every camping trip since then and it’s paid off. It gives that little extra bump of warmth when needed and folds down fairly small.
If anybody hammock camps here, it’s a perfect extra layer if you’re under quilt isn’t exactly cutting it.
It fits perfectly in the double floor of a war bonnet and works well in your tent to keep the cold from creeping up next to or under your mattress.

I bought on size, material and weight. Never been cold in the UK camping (yet). My current 3/4 Thermarest Pro Lite is only 5 cm max inflated and an R rating of around 2. But is old and in good nick but bought before the dog decided he also wants some space on a camp mat!

so to update this. The pillow is awesome. The sleeping mat that arrived was regular one, not wide. So I returned it, didn't even inspect it so no reviews or accolades. Then got side tracked and ended up ordering a Big Agnes Rapide regular wide -price matched for £156 by taunton leisure. This I did inflate, inspect and test on the kitchen floor. Really tough. Really light and yes, I could get it back in the bag it came in, so thats a positive for me. Less than 600g, smaller than any others I would use / could afford and packs back into its sack, with a puncture repair kit. Lighter, smaller, tougher but a tad more expensive...

Big Agnes = 100% a fantastic sleeping pad. I love mine. Although I went for the Boundary deluxe. 25X78. Basically the same as the Rapide. Guarantees a great nights sleep !

I saw this the other night and was not only impressed by the tech inside his trusty old Thermarest, but the condition inside after 8 years of blowing it up.

Yes, Blowing the claim of it rotting inside, which I was told for years. Last year I finally threw away my thermarest Trail, after at least 15 years of use, I so wished I cut mine open.

Very similar to the Aerostat Synthetic 7 - which is a great air bed.

Just bought a Flextail RO5 Zero. Not used it in anger yet (first outing will be at ABR) but lying on it on a wooden floor, it seems to be a huge improvement on my old Mountain Equipment Helium 3.8.

I also bought the minute Flextail Zero pump. Minuscule but it pumps the mat up (and deflates it) in pretty short order…
ditto. got one an older version tough, flextail mini x off vinted for £16

cheap enough then. I have my big Agnes and it is comfy and light as. But it did cost twice as much. I do though have a community to ask for advice and a warranty. If that makes a difference?

Another vote for Thermarests. We took ours to Africa in 1991 and still use them occasionally now.
Purchased my Therm-a-Rests (x2) in 1987 and my adult kids are still hiking with them.

Cascade Designs are the company, started in Washington state (Cascade mountain range) :

Current product line is here:

My 18 yr old Exped down mat has just 'expired' in that it has a minor air leak and some of the internal bonding to create the many tubes of air has given up....so I now have several small air tubes and one huge one....not done a thousand nights camping but has been well worth the money I spent buying it (at the GS club Rosedale Event in 2007?) I'm looking for something sub 600g and with a better r rating than just an airbed (To use for cycling and camping Lands End to JoG next May)
I'll have a nosey thru this thread and see what others recommend. (Don't want to spend a fortune (£200) but I did save a good chunk buying a sleeping bag and tent from this very site...so £100-£120?)
Thoughts ?

Don’t compromise on comfort! False economy. A bad / cold nights sleep can ruin a trip. Buy the absolute best you can afford, especially if it’s going to be used in cold temperatures.
You certainly don’t want a cheap airbed popping a seal in the night because of crap quality. Also, don’t over inflate them either. :thumb2
These look ok though. Not seen one in the flesh to see the quality of materials etc but at £50 it’s got to be worth a shot. :nenau
