I've found a bike to buy for my upcoming trip to Australia - a 2010 1200GS. Looks very sound, although it's done a few miles - 100K kms. Not particularly bothered by this as my own 1100 has done 140. I've been told that the throttle pulleys might crack on this bike, and I'm aware of problems with the rear Paralever boot, but are there any biggies I should ask my daughter's partner (a biker, but knows nowt about GSs) to look for, apart from all the usual stuff? The bike comes with a GS911 which isn't showing any faults, BTW.

valves burn out and or snap off at 100k miles - no issues there then

Are you the guy who was telling us that your bike was "LETHAL" on Road 6 tyres or some such guff ?

There are plenty of 1200s with well over 100k miles on them

Have a look at my post from some years back.

I took my 2010 TC GSA to 150,000 miles, then sold it to a forum member who still got many trouble free miles from her.

My current 2010 TC GSA is 'only' on 76k miles and other than standard service items it needed a clutch.

I've never had issues with valves or throttle pulleys.

Final drive issues,
Paralever bearings,
Propshaft universal joints/splines.
Worn clutch/input shaft splines.
Gearbox input shaft damper.
Balance shaft seal failure
Clutch slave cylinder.
Top yoke bearings /telelever ball joint.
Corroded stick coils,
Corroded /seized brake calipers .
Abs faults.
These are the things off the top of my head that I commonly deal with on 1200’s
I’d personally rather take a well sorted 1100 than a 1200 but each to their own👍

what a stupid reply - you could ride on black ice and diesel every day and never fall off - but you won't be having much fun.....

It's done 100,000 kilometers or circa 60000 miles, so 40000 miles short of a valve disaster?
yep, missed the km bit - they should stay attached for a bit longer, bevel at the back might not... OK if you budget for it - but potential unwanted fun at the start of a long ride

Ugh, and I have a well sorted 1100 sitting in my garage, but it's a PITA to get it to Aus, and too late anyhow.

This one seems quite clean though, and at least the shaft has been checked..... I suppose at around £4K I could literally throw it away at the end of the trip and I still wouldn't have spent as much as I usually do on shipping my 1100.

Um, there do seem to be some issues there. But maybe if it's reached 60K in one piece...

Evening,

Sounds like a great adventure heading over to Australia, sounds something that will be a great experience.

Anyway, I’ve a twin cam up for grabs that’s had plenty spent on it.

So might be a good bike for an adventure given all the big ticket items have been sorted.

Give us a shout if it’s of interest.

Happy to shift on price no problem there

No worries if not and good luck with the trip..
Is it in Australia?

Think I've found the bike, valves or not. The owner passed on a pre sales independent inspection (OK, I know the important bits can't be seen without a strip) and it looks good. Lots of service history and only half an hour from my daughter's place. It only has to last five months of riding! :aidan:moped:

I have an Alfa Giulietta Turbo Nutter Bastard so I don't mind life on the mechanical edge.
