Hi Folk's,

Not been on for a while but a wee question for ya;

Had my 1200gs on a trickle charge for a few months, checking it periodically
( not started), btu seemed to always go to 'Standby' on my charger, been pressing reset as required, didn't think it was an issue until i decided last week to start my bike.
NO Joy.....:( after putting charger back onto bike it showed ' WEAK', how can it be if been on a trickle charger all time? Do they charge then drain the battery, or how do they work?
Or is connecting to the GS Terminals not the answer?

Next one is, I now need a new battery, where to get one ?

P.S Can't look at bike/charger now as down south.

Cheers Fae Scotland.....

battery

i put an odyssey on from moto works about 18months ago as it was cheaper than 1 from bm(wot isnt!) the bike has been stood outside from late nov, with cover on but in all the cold weather.pulled the cover off after 6 weeks and the first thaw since xmas, put the key in,turned on and fired up in half a turn. they can be a tight fit and if you have the TT guard that will need modding but if you read all the bumf on them they are made to last. p.s. they say with a full charge batt can be storedfor 2years,so disconnect and leave, just do throttle re-pos when you re-connect

1. Is the charger suitable for the battery? Older ones won't work very well with AGM batteries e.g. you need an Optimate that is a mk3 or later.

2. If the battery charger is the right type is it working? Borrow someone else's.

3. Is the battery really knackered? If possible, jump start the bike from another vehicle and go for a 30 mile ride without stopping. Measure the battery voltage before and after the trip and with the engine running.

4. If you need a new battery then there are mail order options. BMW Exide one from Motorworks or a Westco from Tayna seem to be popular choices. The Westco is a lot cheaper.

Remember, If you buy in the post and they need to be filled with acid they come dry so you will have to source it elsewhere!

they usually send acid with the battery in a plastic bottle.

If its been on trickle charge all this time, it will be boiled and ****ed. If you mean you have an optimate (or similar) then it hasn't been trickle charging, it's been "Maintaining" it. Although my optimate dried the battery up last winter.

How about checking the electrolyte levels?? Even if it's a mainainence free battery, you can still prise the tops off. Although be careful, it's full (or not) of ACID. Eye protection, care, no smoking, etc etc

I now only plug mine in occasionally..

The AGM batteries in my post are sealed & charged ready to use from the box, same as the Odyssey.

Don't bother with an Oddessey (mine was faulty from new).

Westco are good, as are BMW Exide. :thumb2
