1200 gs ground clearance

:peach:

With the rear turned up fairly high on the right hand side the foot peg and the brake lever will touch down at about the same time. On the left hand side it will be the side stand. One BIG word of caution---on the left side when the side stand touches down sometimes it's the shaft itself not the end of the stand that hits the ground. When this happens you can wash out the back wheel.

Yes, it's happend to me three times. Just a little scary but with the wide bars you can get it back fairly quickly.

Haven't touched down a head yet although I've done that on a Prep that I used to own on the right hand side. That one washed out the front wheel. Lucky again--- I recovered that as well.

touching down

So, what tyres were you using?

BT-20s. They're not near as stickey as the BT-14s but you can't get the 14s on the GS size rims.

cadave, do you have any crash bars fitted. I've got the TT ones and wonder if they will touch down first........I'm off to the Alps in July, so might find out then.

On my bike, I've touched down RHS footpeg and brake lever. But the big thing that touches down a lot is my H&B bars - I've been grinding them away quite a lot... :D

I believe the TT ones don't rob as much ground clearance. :)

Hi Ozy

Didn't expect to see you here. Have you gone for the GS? To replace the KRS, or as an addition?

I got my GS last summer, trading in the KRS plus the 650, which left plenty over for bags and loads of other bits and pieces of clothing, etc.

Cheers

I don't have any crash bars fitted. Just the plastic head protectors.

Hey Andy

How's it going Andy? Yup, traded in the K for a GS, will be switching to an ST in a month.

Forgive my inquisitive approach and per haps I am missing the obvious .. But how do you manage to ground the shaft on a left hand corner, when the shaft is on the right hand side. Or am I reading your post incorrectly. I have in the past ground out bits on the left hand side but never the shaft.

Regards

FYI: With the original BMW engine bars fitted the footpegs still hits ground first.

I *think* he means the 'shaft' of the side stand as opposed to 'tang' on the end.

BTW, I ride everywhere with the preload jacked up as hard as it will go and to be honest you have to really be in full on nutter mode to touch any thing down :D

1200 Ground Clearance

Thanks Andres.........that seems to have cleared that up.

I have my suspension at a very soft setting so perhaps that is why I ground out occasionally. Its never intentional and not very often, but and I am still around. Might change the suspension setting..........

Cheers

on mine i grind the pegs first both sides - had the rear 7 clicks up from sofyest and the front on the second notch which i think is standard.
ps i'm about 15st

Yes it was the shaft of the side stand. As mentioned by another poster you have to really be leaning.

Here's an interesting observation I had at the dealers the other day. Sitting side by side was the K1200S, the R1200ST, and the R1200GS. The highest footpegs from the ground was the GS, next was the ST and then the S. Does this mean you could lean a GS further than the new K1200S?? Maybe not. I just bought an ST Friday. Even though it's slightly lower you can corner it further because the shocks compress less under hard cornering. Again, you have to be really moving for that to happen. We just so happen to have some great roads here in Northern California to do just that.

Just been reading this as I have found it relatively easy to touch down on both sides. As I have only done around 1700 miles on the bike, I was beginning to get a bit alarmed about it.

Last week on a jaunt through the Highlands, I managed to touch down the left footpeg, sidestand end, sidestand ‘shaft’ and the gear selector. In fact the gear selector managed to lose quite a bit of metal in one go. That’s the second time that I have touched down on the left. The first time the sidestand end and footpeg touched. I have also scraped the peg on the right. Plus the sole tread on my Alt Berg boots is getting a hard time!

I have the rear suspension wound in 7 ‘clicks’ from fully hard. Plus I weigh about 14 stone. Tyres are Dunlop Trailmax 607s. I suppose that I could wind in the suspension a bit further.

So is this ‘normal’? At this rate, I’ll need to invest in various new bits before the end of the year. I was thinking about crash bars, but if they rob me of more clearance then I am not so sure that they are a good idea.

interesting... I also went from an 03 krs to an 05 GS. I have to admit I love this bike but for the life of me I can't used to the sound of the engine when idling. The motor sounds like it's either about to implode or just piss and barff all over the place... that said .. "i love this bike" Ride on...
