On route home from work this evening, stopped behind a bus and my GSA cut out. Tried to restart but no joy. Symptoms like a flat battery. Battery meter thing revealed 12 volts and even a new battery (there was a bike shop beside where I broke down!) wouldn't start it.

Lights etc still working but a strange ticking noise when the start button is hit and no sign of the engine turning over.

Bike now in back of a recovery van on route to BMW dealer and I'm on the bus home!

Any ideas of what might have gone wrong??!

enough of this flippery.......

Battery good, wont start.
Sounds like it could be the FPC (fuel pump controller) to me.

More likely that new battery is not fully charged. The starter relay clicking in-and-out is a giveaway. Charge the battery overnight and try again.

The question is - why was it (the old one) flat in the first place?

I know this one - Alternator, just had one go tits up on the car, cost £400:mad:

Or the battery is deceased or not holding charge. I would test this first before ordering a new alternator. How come the lights work but the starter doesn't turn? I thought the lights only come on after the engine has fired? Or when you say lights you just mean the parking light/instruments/tail light?

How did you hook up the other battery from the local garage? If using booster cables and the engine still wouldn't turn over I would suspect a duff battery. I would also check the earth and clean the connectors up.

Check out the bottom spark plug caps as one of mine was faulty and it caused the bike to cut out and it would not turn over until you disconnect the faulty one.

News from dealer/workshop is that a 'fuse' went, even tho I believe that the GS doesn't have any traditional fuses. Apparently they reset it, no errors reported when hooked up to BMW software. Recommended a new battery, costing €200! but apparently bike working fine now.

I'm collecting it on Monday. Time will tell...
