1200 GSA panniers mounted on standard 1200

Anyone know if the 1200 ADV Ally panniers/ mounting frames are compatable with a vario top case/mount on a standard 1200? ( so Ally panniers mounted on a standard 1200... which has a Vario top case on it....

I've heard the set up is not compatible ... but am assuming that if not the extra bit with the grab rails that the vario plate attaches to has to come off with the box?

Any info would be useful

It might be just that the lids of the GSA panniers foul the vario top box I know when I tie a roll bag across the bag, the lids need some encouragement to open

I did think that..I've not seen a picture of a standard 1200 with that set up

Bryn, I just looked at mine, where I put the TT frames on instead of the Vario mounting brackets. I suspect that the GSA frames will use the mounting screw(near the big Vario mounting lug) cos the TT ones do. In which case you will have to remove the Vario brackets first.

But no doubt someone will tell you definitively soon... Jim

I think you can have metal panniers with the vario top box.

You definately can't have a metal top box and vario panniers.

No idea, sorry. By the look of it the pannier lids will catch on the topbox but it may just be the angle of the photograph

The picture was posted by the wacky Dutchman but he's not a subscriber, so you can't PM him to prompt a response....

Someone asked the same question about the mount, no reply. In the picture it look like a conventional 1200GS topbox mount, with the rods that supoort the base plate.

Though in the same thread a sbubscriber posted that he was doing something similar, so he may well know.

I think the Holan racks should be the same as the BMW ones? Do you keep the grab rail from the 1200 GS and put the box on top as in the original?

Now worked out the vario case will fit with the ADV panniers... it can be left on the original rack thingy on the standard 1200... the pannier lids just come off so it should be a possibility

Bryn. Looking at going this route with my r1200gs, sold the vario panniers and kept the top box, so would be intrested to see how you get on with this. When you get sorted post some pics of fittings with and without boxes.

Dave, looking at it there'd be no problems keeping the top case on its original mounting...the case will sit high enough not to cause a problem.. the ally case lids lift completely off anyway so there won't be a fouling issue

Won't be able to post pics as I've just sold the top case Got the adventure panniers complete with adventure rack so leaving my luggage at that
