Hi all

Lunchtime today I took the bike for a short run of about 15 miles, stopped parked it up to go into a shop. Ten minutes later I return crank it up and there was the loudest backfire I have heard in a while.

Upshot is its now only firing on one cylinder. Close inspection reveials that it has blown the rubber air/petrol intake off the cylinder head. Its now jammed off centre of the intake. The force must have pushed it back 10 mm or more.

I manage to get the rubber tube back on with the aid of a screwdriver. The metal retaining clip is not securing the intake but it got me home. Dealers going to refit it for me.

My question has anyone heard of this happening before.

Regard

I think the same happened to 2wheelhumvee on his some time ago

it's happened on my airhead. i just bunged it back on & it's been fine ever since.

Thanks for the replies. Had me worried for a while until I spotted it.

caused by a weak mixture backfire past the inlet valve on starting

it used to happen to some of the injected bm cars I worked on a while ago and could be caused by the owner starting the vehicle with the throttle open slightly
only happened on some cars even so -

could this have happened ?

It did happen to me when were in the Picos-didn't backfire too loudly but it popped the throttle body out of the rubber inlet tube,I managed to re-align the throttle body and seat it with nothing more than brute force and ignorance
Just as well really as the securing clips are not user friendly and cannot be tightened with conventional tools :spitfire I bought some of the "jubilee" type clips to replace them-I'll get round to fitting them 1 day:mmmm

Thanks for the replies. Took it to the BM Stealer to put the clip back on. Took the guy about 10 seconds with the right tool.

I had this happen at the BMW Motorrad meeting last year on my 1200GSA - a nice young man with the correct tool fixed for me at the service area.
