1200 GSA TRIES TO KILL ME !

[Just went to top my 08 GSA up with petrol went down the drive ,pulled the front brake on ,nothing happened pulled it on again this time lever went all the way back to bars! Went straight across main road , bloke in transit skidded but thankfully missed me.WTF is going on with this bike? BMW had it in a couple of weeks a go for the ABS brake lines,(something to do with a recall),wish they had left the f*ck alone/B]. anyway have had two GSA think its about time went back to japanese fed up of BMW's excuses . Got stranded last year in europe had to leave bike there , it made it back two weeks later unfortunately. anyone had this problem before with the brakes cos it is f*ckin scary and not amusing:mad:

Have a look to see if fluid has escaped
 
Is it the servo assisted ABS model on an '08 plate, or the new non-servo ABS version ?

That's you having a wet dream about owning a 1200 and not about a faulty 1200 causing a near death experience.

I think your experience is a bit more NWS than a rant :rob
 
No its not servo assisted. There must be an escape of fluid. Do you think this is connected to the recent dealer visit for the brake pipe recall? Seems to me this is a good place to start.

Did you try the back brake? Is this solid?

Show us the suspected failure bits .. I am interested to know as I have an 08 1200 too.

Although I thought they stopped making servo assisted bikes since the 07 model even before the 08 (new versions) came out???
 
If its an '08 its NOT servo assisted. This was change introduced from the '07 model year. These brakes are NOT known to be problematic.

Hence I asked about photos. He might have a pre-07 bike that was not registered until 08. :rob
 
its an o8 bike with ESA if you put it on centre stand and rear wheel spins touch the front brake and the back stops.maybe they are just linked not servo.anyway front breaks still dont work but the rear does and no warning light on

I think you are talking about "linked brakes" as opposed to servo assisted :nenau

I am no mechanic and my understanding is limited at best. I was told that servo assisted meant a device would assist the brakes. However this device would only work when the engine was running. So when you pushed your bike around when it's turned off, you really didn't get much braking power at all.
 
i have no front brakes even with the engine running the lever is just floppy no resistence whatsoever
 
probably not a nice thing to have happen but it sounds abit like an air lock or servo failure, unless your minted in that case it might not be the bike trying to kill you someone closer to home.

check bike for airlock and fluid level, then check life insurance documents.

So this type of failure can only happen if someone did it intentionally? :nenau
 
If you pump the leaver hard 3or 4 times do you start to get reistance and consiquently front brake? if you do then you have air in the system, if it doesnt pump up then you have insuficcent fluid in the resovoir,can you view that in the site glass in the reovoir on the bars, that has to of leaked out, the favorite for that is the olives down by the disc, especially if that area has been worked on recently. beware that you might have fluid on the disc and that has to be adressed with the fix. I have had this happen, luckily i always test the front brake before moving.

Good advice but the bike does not have servos. The front brake is pretty conventional.

As has already been said ............. does it have any fluid in the reservoir? The bike has just had a front brake pipe changed surely this is a clue.

its pressured system that has just been worked on, even if the joints were tightened they can vibrate loose over two weeks, but not as exciting as the conspiracy theory, Cowboy do you know anyone who wants you dead? Other than the gs that is!
 
Dont touch the bike or check anything, call BMW assist and get them to pick it up.
Let BMW do the investigation and give you a report on what was wrong.
