Who`s binned their 1200 then? I was wondering about those plastic panels around the tank, they must do a good job of protecting the tank, does the 1200 hold together when you bash it about some, like a GS should? or does it disintegrate? I`m coming at this from the angle that some owners on this site of the older GS`s keep talking about how fragile the new 1200 is/looks? Is it fragile or is it just as tough as it`s predecessor? Anyone got pics of their scratched/bent but still rideable 1200 pride and joy? :sunshine

I've seen one that's been down the road at a good 50mph at least (brought in on the back of a truck to SPC). The rocker cover was ground down about 5mm. The gear change was bent, the front indicator lens smashed and there was a slight scratch on the front fork and final drive...apart from that it looked ok. They're still substantial bikes, just designed more efficiently.

Hi, dropped mine at very low speed 3-5mph on ice, nothing but small scratch on LH H&B engine bar & small dent in LH barrier, funny thing is that the engine revved up whilst it was on its left side, must have been a fuel surge or something? I can understand that on carburated engines but not injected ones.

Also Heated vest wire did not disconnect when 200k bike tried to drag 16st me with it!

Regards Shep :P

I've only had mine down off-road. I've had it down on gravel, mud etc and no ill effects. The bike crashes as well as any bike out there. The plastic panels you speak of are so far in that the chances of them being hit are minimal. BTW I've also had it down with the BMW bags on, again no ill effect to the bike or the bags.

Is it robust

I noticed mine has small dents in aluminium tank panels. Hardly noticeable, but concerning for a $24K machine.
Ididn't think I was gripping it that tightly!

A litle note about the side panels. On a recent rideout with some Dutch GSers, somebody's side panel became semi-detached. The front part seemed to have let go, and so it was flapping about like a wounded albatross.

The fault was traced to poor fitting by a mechanic (the bloke had had touratech lights fitted the day before), and the company gave him a new side panel free of charge. But it does mean you need to take care when fitting the side panels, to make sure they are seated properly.

Well I've just been knocked off by a black cab in London and you'd hardly tell exept for the scuff on the cylinder protectors, hand guard and end of the pipe. I was pretty impressed as if I'd been on the CBR I'd be in for the thick end of 1k's worth of fairings (both sides).:)

Bummer about the cab! Hope you're ok.

Screw the black cab, hope the geezer is OK...!!

Those fairies (as my mother in law calls them) are very expensive to replace... a GS does take much better to a small kiss of tarmac... do you have H&B bars on yours, or any other bars for that matter..?

Cheers for the concern guys I'm touched:beerjug:

I had some of the black plastic cylinder guards, they did the business more than adequately. Only problem is I've noticed that the bike is running strange. On light throttle it is OK, on full throttle it is hesitant with erratic power. Not quite sure what that's about, probably gonna have to take it in.:(

on full throttle it is hesitant with erratic power

Sounds horribly like the fuel pump. The 2nd time mine went, that was the initial symptom.
