Driving motorway this morning, my 06 1200 (20,000 miles) loses power in 5th gear and revs die, I was lucky to get across to the hard shoulder without incident and she stalled as i pulled to a halt.
Started once or twice for me, but immediately revs dropped and died.
Then started and I gave it a good hard rev and it sounded okay so i got going again, instantly the fuel reserve light came on bu then went off again within a minute.
I thought, possibly dirty petrol. Drove around 6 miles, exited motorway, filled her to the brim with 15 litres of fuel, came out and wont start. Again once or twice she started but weakly and died very quickly.

Fuel pump gone?

Many thanks for any advice on this.

Sounds like the fuel pump controller. Mine went recently - it died at idle but would run if you kept the revs up. It would be worth a look, anyway. If the bike's still under warranty, get BMW assist out; if it's not, get it to a dealer - BMW did mine under goodwill.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Speedy, appreciate the reply. Looks like that is what it is, gonna try drive to the dealer (hopefully it gets me there) this afternoon.

1200 Fuel controller - Generally intermittent???

So I went back to hope the bike would start and get me in to Duffys to get it fixed. Not a chance. The only thing I was gonna achieve was to flatten the battery.

Most of the time is this problem intermittent? (After ocurring first it got me going again for 6 miles or so) or is total failure known?

A possible way delaying the inevitable (and getting you going again to get to a dealer) is to take the FPC out - clean all around the area and glasspaper the heat dispersal fins on the unit. They get corroded and the unit overheats and cuts out. That's why sometines it will start again once the bike's been off for a while.

Put it all back together again and spray well with WD40.

This was done to mine not long ago by a knowledgeable RAC chappie and the unit continued working while I got BuMW to rip me off for a new one:spitfire

Thanks Dahoum, That was beyond my technical capabilities. What I actually did was pay a guy €60 to van it to Joe Duffys, who fixed it.
They charged me €30 labour, and the parts were covered on good will even though bike beyond warranty.
I though this was fair enough.

Thanks for your advice. Hopefully thats the end of it now.

Although I will be buying breakdown assist cover today, cos its handy to have.
