Just had my 1150GSA written off by "I didnt see you.com" so looking for a replacement and thinking of a 1200 instead.
Have seen a very nice one but it has 31000 on the clock already (06 plate) and is £7700.
Has full BMW service history and is immaculate on the outside but Just wondering how bullet proof the 1200's are (lot of money to spend without prior knowledge)?
My 1150 had 26k on the clock and didnt miss a beat but that seemed to be made of the same stuff as stonehenge!
Just wondered if anyone had any experience of the 1200's and any opinions would be greatly appreciated
Cheers!!

Paid £8500 for my 08 plated one with 6k on the clock, FSH, Comfort pack +ABS and full luggage, so that sounds a bit steep - I am guessing it is fully loaded (or very overpriced!)

but Just wondering how bullet proof the 1200's are (lot of money to spend without prior knowledge)?

Mine scares the hell out of me approaching 9k on the clock, looking around here it would seem Final Drives are normally buggered before 40k (and often far less) and gearboxes start leaking at similar mileages, then you have the electrics (EWS / FPC etc) which can fail at any age / mileage, for these reason I personally would not touch a 1200Gs with more than 15k on the clock (will be selling mine around 20k in a bid to avoid these issues)

Maybe it would be a far safer bet to find another nice 1150 :nenau The days of "bulletproof" BMW's seem long gone :blast

They never were bullet proof, thats just an old wives tale. Look into the frequency of repairs and youll see that the newer models are on a par with the old ones. It just that people were more inclined to roll there sleeves up and sort them out a few years ago.

Now all you get is bleating on an internet forum, which is strange seeing as you've had none of the mentioned faults. Perhaps you should refrain from reading all the doom and gloom and just ride the bike.:thumb

Can of worms you opened!
I am on my 3 Rd 1200 RT and had a 1200 GSA ( was a 06 model with 20k one year old , paid £8000 in 07, purchased from this site)
Never had a FD issue , some cut out problems but dealer fixed it. Damper went at 18000 miles , they replaced the ESA and a control unit on the handlebar( £1500 total cost). Some corrosion on the GSA but parts replaced by BM.

I recon the more gizmo you have the more expensive repairs will be.
It is a buyers market, there are plenty of bikes around.

Go for it if you want one they are not to bad , yes a few things go wrong with them and sometimes you have to spend a few quid , but dont you have to do that with all bikes , as said in previous posts there,s a good few around at the min and its a buyers market with deals to be had :thumb

If it's reached 31K without anything self-destructing, doesn't that suggest that it's essentially sound?

And if it has FBMWSH then the wear items such as brake pads, bearings and fluids should be OK for another year at least, and that the recall work has been done. It also suggests that the previous owner took decent care of it (which seems to be the case for most BMs anyway)

PS glad you walked away from your encounter in good shape, and are getting straight back on the horse

my bmer

o go on buy mine then! its an 06 done just 30k, been round the world once with 1 headlight bulb gone and a puncture, got some rust and the last bmer service was Istanbul, you can have it for 6700,bargin and it has street cred.....they make or they brake...ride `em and see.....:pullface:roll

How Much???????

Bloody hell. Just paid less than that for a 1200 GSA 07 plate 3800 miles and absolutly immaculate. I think the bike you are looking at is well overpriced mate.

Forget the doom and gloom merchants who will queue up to give the 1200 a kicking.

It's a fecking good bike and whilst nothing is bomb proof, they are on the whole as good as anything else out there. The dealer back is second to none as well in my opinion. As much as people would have you believe that the 11**'s are bomb proof, they aren't and have there own issues.

My 56 plate GSA has 66k, lives outside, been across the US twice, been off road and gets roundly abused and has never let me down. I'm looking at keeping her for many years and expecting 150k plus miles and there is no reason why this shouldn't happen. OK, I'll have to replace bits and pieces but it's cheaper than new.

30k is just run in so buy it and enjoy it:thumb
