I can not wait till I get my new 1200 as I'm sick of the extra 52kgs the adventure weighs on trail rides with full tank. The bike is a beast. I've just come back from a trail ride and dropped the thing twice only because I could not hold it up. The bike is great on dry trails but they are a hand full on sand and mud.
The adventure is still a lot better bike than the standard 1150gs, but the 1200 is going be like being back on my old 650 dakar.

KiwiAdventure,

I have never ridded an adventure so can't comment on that. But I can confirm that i have been out for a ride today and this puppy (the 1200) likes to be thrown around.

I haven't dropped it yet, but I have been throwing it around and its surprisingly agile for a big bike.

I predict you will love it.

Phil

Even without the extra weight, the 1200 is still a very large heavy motorcycle to take offroad. It will be better, but not by that much...

I think its far better

My 1200 is by far better than my Adventure its sooo much lighter it felt like a sports bike when I first rode it, the seat seems to be better for me even on the highest setting I feel confident when stopping off road where I didnt on the adventure, the electrics are a bit silly, not being able to just wire in what you want but this is not a real problem, the best thing is the performance it is so much more responsive and doesent struggle to pull silly speeds I did 404 miles on mine on friday mostly motorways mostly over 90 and whenyou want to overtake theres instant power there to use I love the bike and all it can do, I dont think anyone would be dissapionted with a 1200GS after owning an adventure or std GS ;)

I have taken my GSA off road,,,but lets be honest...the 1200,or the GSA are to big to off roading where I live.
I will still do the odd trail on the GSA ,but use my CRF when I want to do some Hard off road riding.
If i bin the Honda i dont have to spend a shit load of cash fixing it.
Has anyone dropped a 1200 at speed off road yet:confused: it does look like bits would drop off it very easy:eek:
:beerjug: safe fun riding Dazzer

Options

1. Dont fill the tank.
2. Loose some weight.
3. Buy a 250 trail bike.

Don't get me wrong. I have enjoyed the 2 years I've had the adventure, but there is a lot better bike out there now called the 1200gs. I don't want to go hard trail riding I just want an alround bike that is as light as a dakar and will be fun 2 up riding. The 1200 has both.
There is know way people can say the 1200 is not as could as the old bikes. It is so much better.

dont clean around the BM tank badge:confused:
it looks like its held in place with blue tack:eek:
For me it was better to keep the GSA for touring, and buy the Honda for off roading , this still worked out cheeper than changing the Adv,for a 1200gs,
I have jumped of the CRF at about 50 mph and it only put a few scratches in the front mud guard+the side pannel and hand guard.
I would like to know how fast the chap was going when he binned the 1200,it looks like it will cost a shit load of cash to put that right:tears

Dazzer:

Dropped mine up in the Northern Territory at about 80kph (50mph) onto hardbased dirt with a thick loose top covering. Went down on the righthand side.

Damage: headlight surround (headlight saved by homemade protector), indicator and screen (both only slight), handguard, mirror (both scratched), the black panel with BMW badge was badly gouged, and is now sitting out away from the tank. Some think the tank may be out of whack, too. Crash bar (ie: engine protector) was rammed back against the pot, some scratching damage to the pot (crash bars will need replacing!) and the aluminium look-alike outer skin of the pannier started to peel away and had bad scratching. Found some little black rubber grommet things in the dirt near the bike, but can't see where they came from, but must be from the bike. And also the lefthand side "silver" panel has a dent in it, so I must have kicked it when I went over.

Hasn't actually been assessed for insurance purposes yet, but probably about $3000 -$4000 damage. Won't hold my breath waiting for the parts to arrive though! :D :D Nothing mechanical was damaged, luckily, as I was hundreds of km from civilisation!

Any Photo's

The wrecked red 1200 in the pic above was obliterated at pretty high speed during a wheelie attempt.

However, it had been down on its ear three times during the day in "normal" offroad spills, and you wouldn't really notice.

Option 4. Listen to your Mum and eat your veg, drink lots of milk, and get lots of sleep. Then when you're big, you'll be man enough to ride a fully-loaded adventure...

I've only dropped mine a couple of times....:D

And I've found a couple under the bike where I park it over the last couple of months. No idea where they come from but clearly from the bike!

Hi Beemerbird
Hope you were ok after the spill.
Here in the Yorkshire Dales,I thought I was along way from anywhere When i hurt myself once and I was only a few miles from help.
I will now only take the Adventure off road on the odd ride out,
I cant get the buzz out of it , like i can with the Honda,
you will know what I mean.
I know the Adv,can be used off road, but not like, I like to Ride
{ stoney Knows what i mean :green gri }
Hope you get the bike fixed, without to much damaged to you wallet :beerjug: Dazzer
