Doing Strata Florida on the 1200GSA WC next weekend.

Anyone done any deep wading on WC yet? I gather you can go pretty damned deep to not far below headlight. The old 1200 had a crap wading depth due to low intake...

(Done it before on a 300 exc; was fun)

Ok, let's assume you're being serious here for a second (and of course we will want piccies or it just didn't happen)

The 'wade depth' of any vehicle is dependant on the location of quite a few key components........and I'd be really surprised if you could go even UP TO the headlight on a WC.

Where is the air intake? (Minis used to drown in 3 inches of puddle because their intakes sucked up enough water from that height to hydro-lock the engine)
Where is the ECU? (The good old Landy Defenders had their ECU's as standard fitted on top of the front middle seat bottom panel, so you knew that if your thighs got wet whilst fording, your car was about to die)
What about the FD? is it sealed, vented, gaitored? (I've killed 4 FD bearings on my old lebenfiddy GSA through fording........I must have photos from a dozen or more events/rides where I've been draining milky soup from the bezel box......can you even do that on a toilet? :nenau)

At an event in Wales (I think, maybe someone will be able to correct my fuzzy memory on that) we had 6 guys holding HRH Oonyack's 1200 ADV vertically on its back wheel to drain the water, then it took 3 or 4 oil changes to get the engine oil clear of emulsification.
The very first time that a certain person here who I used to do a lot of fording with took his brand spanking new 1200 through a ford up at the East Mids event (after some severe flooding) he and I ended up racing eachother out of a river.......I spent the rest of the day with my oil pressure light on because the switch had shorted (it dried out before I rode home) but his bike had to have new ring gear and a new starter after being hydrolocked (fortunately, he was able to get it done under warranty which is why I'm not naming him ;) )

On our trusty 11xx bikes, you can drown them, remove the plugs, turn them over a few times, dry the plugs and give it all a squirt of jizz then they will start again.......On the MKI 1200, the breather went straight into the sump :blast

I honestly have no idea what the wading depth of a toilet is, but FFS check out all of the common sense things before you do it......Intakes, ECU, FD breather, possibly GB breather?

Then go for it......and if you can post pics that rival anything that us old luddites can and have done on our 11xx's, I will doff my hat to you sir :clap

All good points. Not that I want to come back home on the back of a truck of course.

Will get some tools out tomorrow and strip some panels off to get a better understanding of where the air intake is as its pretty hard to work out it out just by looking at the bike.

ECU & FD, well thats all covered by warranty....then when it's 3 yrs old it's someone else's problem... :-)

Will post some piccies of the 1200 doing Strata Florida for sure.

While you strip off your panels, strip the cover off the smallprint in your manual..........A warranty claim for drowning a bike or some essential part of it like the ECU? :nono

(You may want to have Nutty on speed dial to remove this thread so you can 'stick it to the man' and say it was just a shower you rode though :D ;) )

All I can tell you from experience is that on an 11xx, you can ride as deep as the front wheel plus a few inches........you do it slowly, creating a bow wave dip behind it that is about 4-6 inches deep, and if the bike splutters and stalls, DO NOT attempt to restart it......get off, push it out, take the plugs out and drain it.

Whilst IN the water (if it's deep enough, which I doubt it will be) keep your revs up a bit......you do not want water to flood your 'zorst, and that's one of the reasons we've had to flip a 1200 up vertically before now.

Good luck, and post video if poss :D

I'm here to delete this thread if you need me to.:P

WC, I think you're bonkers, but am looking forward to seeing the pictures!:thumb:D

The only crossing you should worry about is the last one in this video, it's steeper than it looks and usually slippy - :blast

River? Phah!!!

That's a puddle (in those clips anyway)

Corwen, in Tomotei's back yard, that's a decent river crossing :)

Wow.....I just looked it up as a separate search on YT and fekked if one attributed to me wasn't on there :D

An outside event electrical contractor electrical waterproofing spray or NanoProtech spray will normally eliminate any electrical issues when fording water with a bike or 4x4 ;-)

...us southern softies may not have bleak moutains and peaks to ride over or wild rivers to cross but we do have some fords

I see this clip was taken in May, Ive only ridden in once when I had a bike that was good in deep water ( my X Challange) and that was in the winter with melting snow, it was much deeper, very cold but the water was flowing and clear so you see the big holes.

Ok. Stripped off some panels for a looksy. Air intakes are the two rams either side of and below the headlight.

Which is basically saddle height. Which is fekkin high for an overweight wanna off roader. If not higher than my 300 exc!

After the intake, the tubes go uphill to the airfilter on top of tank.

So seems to me you could get the water level part way up the air intake rams and still have room for more. But I won't be testing that on my bike :-).

The ECU seems to be at air intake height but also seems quite weatherproofed as is below saddle and it gets quite wet in there on a fugly day, even on the road.

So if air intake height defines the max water depth then it seems to me that if a KTM Enduro bike can take the depth then so can the GSA WC. Just don't drop the fekker....

Is there not a drain from the bottom of the air box, that is lower than the air intakes?

Strata Florida done on the 1200GSA WC yesterday morning. Was very wet with all the recent rain. Up to knee depth when sitting down with feet on pegs....which is up to air intake level. No dramas. Bike performed impeccably in the drink. Fek me the new bike is simply amazing off road compared to the old. The Enduro Pro mode with the off road biased traction is just mind blowing. Where the old bike would have lost it, the WC just plods on.

More fun today; taking in Happy Valley nr Macynlleth.

Pics and vid to follow.
