My 05 plate gs can be a bit temprimental. When I turn on ignition the gear indicator shows 2nd even tho it's in neutral and when I push the button nothing at all I turn ignition off and try again can do this a few times.. Any one else experienced this or any ideas what it could be.

Your gear sensor is stuffed or needs reset. That said you should be able to pull the clutch and it will start. If the bike thinks it's in gear it won't start by design.

Mine does that if it's been standing a while or needs a gearbox oil change....The switch must get sticky?

Assuming the play in the clutch switch is correctly adjusted. Can be done by trial and error if not, or switch checked out using a GS911.

So would it be best to get it checked out by a dealer got a trip planed in the alps and don't want a breakdown..

have you checked the starter motor realy under the seat, corrosion on the terminal block is common

Breakdowns happen to the best maintained bikes sometimes.....

Arrange some European breakdown/recovery insurance if your vehicle policy doesn't include it, then relax in the knowledge you have it covered should the worst happen. Carry the phone numbers required in your mobile phone. I also have my breakdown numbers dyno taped beneath the plastic side covers on the bike in case my phone dies on me when most needed so I can remove the cover and find a phone.

Try prodding the gear lever down until it shows neutral.

Remove the gear indicator from the back of the gearbox. Dry it out on a radiator. Then fill it with wd40. Reinstall it.

Mine wont start unless it's in neutral - clutch switch isn't working. Ive lived with it but hopefully wont need a new master cylinder to sort it out. BMW have a habit of not selling simple spare parts if they can sell a whole (expensive) unit.

The switch is available seperately and is not that expensive but it might have just come loose and just needs re-positioning. Its the same switch as the brake so you could swap them to be sure if it works or not. When mine went it still made the clicking noises so thats not a defacto method of telling if it works or not.

alfie, the same happened to my 06 GS. as already said it will more than likely be the gear indicator sensor on the rear of the gearbox as you said the gear indicator display is acting up. they are prone to getting water ingress there due to the low position and not an uncommon problem on the 1200. if after trying the wd40 route and it's still acting up its an easy job to replace it.

Which part, the gear sensor or the clutch switch? Gear sensor can't be missed, it's on the back of the gearbox with wires coming out of it.

look from the gear shift side of the bike and at the back of the gearbox, directly behind the swing arm is the gear sensor. a large black plastic part with 2 screws, i think, and as said wires coming from it.
hope this helps

Silly thing..... Check your oil. If it's low and cold it will struggle more to turn over.

It will start in gear, as long as clutch is in and side stand up.

You can't remove clutch switch as the ecu checks for clutch position on startup.

For those who believe, no explanation is necessary.

For those who do not, none will suffice

This is a good thread my indicator plays up has been a bit better since I removed it & cleaned it you separate halves carefully with a knife or thin edge clean the unit I used silicone around the edge of seal to stop water getting in.

Basically you need bike off sidestand that's why it don't start use centre stand or sit on it then clutch in 1st time starter ;)

Here's a pic of the blighter it's tight to get in by swingarm & you need a 1/4 ring spanner it fits the Torx bolts or buy the correct one or like I did drill a hole in a small socket & use an Allen key for leverage they are a pain but I'm used to mine playing up once in a while.
