"Last but certainly not least, the new six-speed gearbox"

The gear box is the same as the 1200gs. This sucks. The best thing the 1150 adventure had was the low first gear.

I like all of you have been waiting to see the new bike and like what I see, but without the low first gear it's not much good once you go off road.

The standard 1200 box is OK off road. Yes, a lower first gear would be nice, but you can live without it. Allegedly the first gear on the 12 is lower than a standard 1150 (so someone said).

Maybe with the extra lard factor of the Adventure version, you would need the lower gear :D

Yes the 1200gs box is lower than the 1150gs but not as low as the 1150adv.

I have on order a 1200hp and I asked BMW why the gear box is the same as the standard 1200gs. What they said was the HP is a lot lighter bike so it does not need the lower first gear

If you are really determined to ride off road why not buy a proper off road dirt bike ?
Let's face it any GS is too big and heavy for easy and enjoyable of road riding, ask Charley Boorman.

My Adv doesn't have the low 1st gear. Doesn't stop it going off road.
Handily the bike has a clutch for very low speeds.

The new adventure getting extra 15 hp with increased torque an optional lower geared 1st.

I know you diehards are in love with your old Adventures but things move on. Fitzy sums it nicely I think too heavy by far for serious off roading.... Lets face it even the HP2 is.

I agree, A £1000 road legal moto x bike would do everything much better and cheaper. I use to have a cr500 that would eat anything you through at it(including me  ). It was road legal reliable and only cost me £800. :thumb

I had a road legal IT 465 for a while, that used to regularly eat me up

.

Naahh - if one reads carefully the press release says 15hp etc over previous 1150GSA ie remains same as base model, gearbox too!

I dunno what you are on about. The 1200 gearbox is great. When it breaks you get another for nothing - cant get better than that. disclaimer: only in the first two years unless negotiated otherwise using firearms, knives or kidnapping young children for collateral

:tosser
... just a fatter GS with a nice windscreen.

Nothing really to be excited.

You are all missing the point. Yes you can make it easy with a small bike, but the fun is if you can ride a pig of a bike cross country.

It was BMW that put the low first gear in the 1150adv for a reason. Now they have changed tack and the 1200adv is for light trail riding.

Now one of you guys said just use the clutch. The clutch is one of the weak points of the bikes. A lot of the time I would not use the clutch on my 1150adv off road and the gears worked great.

I was one of the few 1150adv riders that took the bike off road. Even BMW said they can not beleave were I could get the bike and that was only because of the low first gear. It's just like 4x4 driving.

Does the final drive gearing figure in the equation?

Is the 1200GS final drive gearing the same as the 1150/Adv?
